Aboard a long-range research vessel, in the vast reaches of the South Pacific, the cast and crew of the reality show Sealife judge they have establish a ratings bonanza. For a director dying for drama, a distress call from Henders Island—a mere blip on any radar—might be just the ticket. Until the first scientist sets foot on Henders—and the essential test of survival starts.
For when they reach the island’s shores, the scientists are utterly unprepared for what they find—creatures unlike any ever recorded in natural history. This is not a lost world frozen in time; this is Planet as it might have looked after evolving on a separate path for half a billion years—a fragment of a lost continent, with an ecosystem that could topple ours like a house of cards.

What was really a pretty excellent premise suffered from too much know-it-all science and downright silliness. In the much more capable hands of the late Michael Crichton this could have been an extraordinary tale. He could right science that the normal reader could know. Fahy’s science was way too convoluted to wade through and as a replacement for I skipped over most of it. The thought of this long lost island was really fantastic, and as I was reading it and would go outside I would look around me waiting for something weird creature to attack me. Adding a kindly species was excellent, but the one he choose seemed right out of Harry and the Hendersons, in fact, his name was even Henders. Too terrible Fahy couldn’t have written this tale with more seriousness and less pomposity.

unless you’re willing to place aside your own common sense, not to mention any understanding of basic science you may have.
An island ecosystem whose evolutionary path diverges from the rest of the world 250 million years ago (Permian/Triassic boundary), a time when the Planet veteran the most severe extinction event in geologic history. Why was Henders island never a part of any supercontinent where interaction of the diffeent species could occur?
Mankind started migrating from Africa 70,000 to 50,000 years ago, first took to the seas at leaat 5,000 years ago, saw the island and named it and yet rumor has it that never set foot on it.
And with all the fighting in the South Seas during WWII and the latest in planet orbit scrutiny satellites no one knew anything about this island.
Sorry, not amount of scientific jargon and nonsensical attempts at scientific explanation can save this. Don’t waste your time.

How very disappointing. The characters are flat, he rushes the tale into the conflict with any real erect-up, then the tale drags on to the predictable and contrived ending that leaves the reader hanging. This is very much a rip-off of Jurassic Park. The science-dumping is gratuitous and detracts from the (already weak) tale. Finally, the premise of the tale is so implausible that it’s impossible to suspend belief. I know this is science fiction and you’ve got to let people take certain liberties but, come on: there is no way a 2-mile wide island could support the mega-fauna he presents in this book. It’s ridiculous. While not utterly terrible, this book is disappointing on nearly every conceivable level.
Not recommended.

I was really excited about this book. Sounded very appealing and it did get some excellent reviews. But, there isn’t much or a plot, no character development and no real excitment. It is not a very excellent book, although the pictures of the creatures are cool. May make a better movie. I would save my money and time and reread jurassic park and wait until the movie comes out.

This is a fantastic book if you are majoring in biology or want to write a paper on evolution. If you are looking for Jurassic Park type action, be uncomplaining. There are a few pages of action, but you have to look for them. Too much scientific jargon not enough character development or action. Disclaimer: I only read the first half of the book before I gave up.
