Product Description
Yes, humans and canines are different species, but current research provides fascinating, certain evidence that what we share with our dogs is greater than how we vary. As behaviorist and zoologist Dr. Patricia McConnell tells us in this remarkable new book about emotions in dogs and in people, more and more scientists accept the premise that dogs have rich emotional lives, exhibiting a wide range of feelings including dread, rage, surprise, sadness, and like.
In For the Like of a Dog, McConnell suggests that one of the reasons we like dogs so much is that they prompt emotions in ways similar to humans. After all, who can communicate joy better than a puppy? But not all emotional expressions are obvious, and McConnell teaches both beginning dog owners and veteran dog lovers how to read the more devious expressions hidden behind fuzzy faces and floppy ears.
For persons of us who deeply cherish our dogs but are sometimes baffled by their behavior, For the Like of a Dog will come as a revelation–a treasure trove of useful facts, informed speculation, and intriguing accounts of man’s best friend at his worst and at his very best. Readers will learn how dread, rage, and happiness underlie the lives of both people and dogs and, most vital, how understanding emotion in both species can improve the relationship between them. Thus McConnell introduces us to the possibility of a richer, more rewarding relationship with our dogs.
While we may never be absolutely certain what our dogs are feeling, with the help of this riveting book we can know more than we ever thought possible. Persons who consider their dogs part of the family tree will find For the Like of a Dog engaging, enlightening, and utterly engrossing.

Obviously written by a new Leader. The amount repetition in this book can become overwhelmingly irritating. The information it does give is certainly worth knowing, and is why I gave the book two stars.

I was expecting this audio to be something like a cross between dog psychology and “Marley and Me.” It was exclusively the psychology of dog behavior, and is not simple listening.

Not all the way thru yet but the book shares much of my own philosophy. Worth reading.

This is a powerful and moving read for all people who have ever felt a soulful tie to a dog. It opens one’s eyes to better see the mystery and spirituality between humans and their extended selves. Another book that focuses on such profound relations is seen in Walking the Trail, One Man’s Journey Along the Cherokee Trail of Tears by Jerry Ellis. Along the 900 mile walk by this Cherokee leader he is befriended by a black lab, Crow Dog, that becomes a major force in this extraordinary spiritual journey.
