This arrived in a timely manner. We haven’t gone through the book at part yet but it looks like it could have contained more hotel choices. But it seems to have a excellent breakdown on the different islands and we’re looking forwards to checking it out further.
Reader’s Rating: 4 / 5
Pros:
1. Is now in full color – with a lot more pictures
2. More maps than previous editions
3. As with editions past, has categories separated by island and subcategories within. The actives sections include several referrals so that you can start preparation straight away
4. The book layout makes it very simple to read and includes sample itineraries for various lengths of stay
Cons:
None

Now when I travel, nowadays I really prefer to just use a smartphone – so I wish they would make this as downloadable content. But there is something about a book. You can sit on the beach and read it. You don’t have to worry about power/reception etc.
But of course this would apply to any book vs online. The nice thing about this 2010 edition is that it’s up to date and has:
* large clear simple to read maps
* cheat sheat for local foods, on inside back take in
* maps/sections on the national parks
* sidebar “tips” with local flavor (best beaches, etc)
It’s nearly as if this would be a excellent read take in to take in as you are preparation the trip, but when there a smartphone with yelp! and additional apps would be excellent to find the real up to date local reviews and current pricing for hotels, gps navigation, etc.
Yes some reflect these guidebooks are out of date, but they still hold a place in terms of preparation a trip and helping you get around once you’re there.

Depending on inclination, Fodor’s Travel Guides could easily be considered the best option when preparation a trip. Despite a trend to focus on amount over quality, the amount of information provided in the 600+ pages is more than thorough and extremely sufficient for first time visitors to Hawai’i (malihini). Sure, it doesn’t have some of the hidden gems, hotspots known only to the locals (kama`aina), but it more than makes up for that deficiency – if it is one – by saturating a reader with not only enough information to plot a month long trip to different islands (i.e. Oahu, Maui, The Huge Island…), but also providing the inspiration for travel.
The variety provided for any Hawai’i trip is overwhelming. Where to stay, what to do, how to act, who to watch, when to go, it’s all there. From scuba and snorkeling to leisurely days traversing State parks and malls, nothing significant is missed. The best beaches, the most tasty meals, fantastic surf locations, gorgeous pictures of flora and fauna, the luaus, deep sea fishing, horseback riding, shopping and entertainment, nightlife, shrines, the list goes on and on. To make it simpler to navigate, Fodor’s provides various rankings and highlights for the traveler with limited time.
For example:
Fodor’s Choice – Must see sites stamped with orange stars
Highly Recommended – Fantastic sites stamped with black stars
One-Day Itineraries – A personal travel guide for the day
Restaurants – Rating, $$, food style
Flight Time Map – Displays travel times from one island to another
Driving Maps – Very detailed, with driving directions/ ‘Ao’ao (but not enough detail to help the neophyte avoid terrible Honolulu traffic or get around the confusing one-way traps that restrict a name from getting to their location)
Place simply, Fodor’s Hawai’i 2010 Guide provides everything a first-time visitor needs to plot a trip and avoid unknown downfalls. The next time I go will be my fourth trip (Hana Hou!), and I’m sure I’ll still use the guide to smooth the rough edges.

Delightful book!
Fodor’s Hawaii 2010 is full of accurate useful information about one of the most gorgeous places on planet. While I doubt that I’ll ever have the opportunity to go there, I can delight in studying the information in this book and staring at the lovely pictures. The maps are fun too.
One of the most impressive features of the book is its weight, which speaks volumes about the sturdiness of the construction. What a treasure!
