Daniel Keyes wrote small SF but is highly regarded for one classic, Flowers for Algernon. As a 1959 tale it won a Hugo Award; the 1966 novel-part expansion won a Nebula. The Oscar-winning movie adaptation Charly (1968) also spawned a 1980 Broadway musical.
Following his doctor’s instructions, engaging simpleton Charlie Gordon tells his own tale in semi-literate “progris riports.” He dimly wants to better himself, but with an IQ of 68 can’t even beat the laboratory mouse Algernon at maze-solving:
I dint feel terrible because I watched Algernon and I lernd how to end the amaze even if it takes me along time.I dint know mice were so smart.
Algernon is extra-clever thanks to an experimental brain operation so far tried only on animals. Charlie keenly volunteers as the first human theme. After frustrating delays and agonies of concentration, the effects start to show and the reports steadily improve: “Punctuation, is? fun!” But getting smarter brings cruel shocks, as Charlie realizes that his merry “friends” at the bakery where he sweeps the floor have all along been laughing at him, never with him. The IQ rise continues, taking him steadily past the human average to genius level and beyond, until he’s as intellectually alone as the ancient, foolish Charlie ever was–and now painfully aware of it. Then, ominously, the smart mouse Algernon starts to deteriorate…
Flowers for Algernon is a timeless tear-jerker with a terrific emotional impact. –David Langford

For the longest time I believed this was the worst book ever. After reading A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, I now realize it is the second worst book ever written. In both tales, nothing happens that is worth mentioning. It’s just that kind of book that is critically acclaimed for how well it is written. But, the tale is poor. I wrote better tales when I was in first grade.
Basically, things take place in chronological order as they would in real life. But, they are not connected. It’s right that in real life not everything is connected. But, if I wanted to experience real life, I wouldn’t read it, I would live it. The point of a book should be to tell an appealing tale. That is not what this book does.

The book I read was called Flowers for Algernon. This book was written by Daniel Keyes. The main conflict of the book was about this developmentally delayed adult named Charlie who was trying to beat the lab mouse Algernon in a maze race. Algernon had a surgery done on his brain to make him smarter. The researchers wanted to try the same surgery on Charlie to see if he could beat the mouse after the surgery.
There were a few things I liked about this book and many things I didn’t like about this book. I thought this book was not exciting at all. I didn’t delight in the whole point of the book. I felt this way because I am not very interested in reading or research studies. I was not able to feel like I was in the book. I felt this way because I really can’t connect in any way to the tale. The main conflict didn’t interest me in anyway. I just didn’t like the whole concept of the book and to me it was dull. I do reflect the characters seemed very realistic. I felt the leader gave a lot of descriptions about the characters. In some instances he gave so much information that it became dull. The books ending to me was extremely disappointing. I felt this way because I didn’t really care for the whole book whole book and I was so bored of reading it that it didn’t really matter to me.
Daniel Keyes writing style for Flowers for Algernon is unique. He writes in the voice of Charlie the main character. Much of the book is written by Charlie through his own notes that he is keeping. At times there are so many misspelled words that it is nearly hard to read. The leader doesn’t really use vocabulary in an appealing way. His writing style seems basic. The leader does use Charlie’s self written notes as dialog to tell the tale and let the reader know Charlie’s emotions. Daniel Keyes writing is descriptive yet slightly dull. The tone throughout the book is nearly monotone and it lacks excitement. I know that Flowers for Algernon is a classic novel but I establish the authors writing style to be to some extent dull. I would have liked a small more excitement in the book but maybe the leader wanted to show how sad, pathetic, and dull Charlie’s life was.
I would rate this book two stars out of ten compared to additional books that I have read. I give it this rating because it was so dull and dull that I just wanted to stop reading it. I guess I wouldn’t really recommend this book to anyone unless they want to read about a sad research study.
I reflect this book was HORRIBLE. Another thing that happened in the book was that in the beginning of the book he had to keep taking small tests to see if he would be able to have the surgery and do the conduct experiment. He obviously got to do the conduct experiment.

I despised this book. It was very dull, because, the events in the book were very unrealistic and stupid. I wouldn’t recommend this book. It is one of the most dull books I have ever read, next to lord of the flies. DON’T READ IT

This book had nothing to interest me. The plot and characters were not appealing. The details were dull. I had to read this book for school otherwise I wouldn’t have read it. Anyway, this is a really terrible and dull book.
