Over five hundred simple mechanical movements from America’s first one hundred years of the Manufacturing Revolution. For persons who share an interest in mechanical things, this book is addictive. Through the use of simplified, concise drawings, here are 507 of the tiny components which make up complex machinery in areas as diverse as C.R. Otis’s safety stop for the elevator, Pickering’s administrator for a steam engine, Arnold’s escapement for watches, compound parallel rules, piston rod guides, the grasshopper beam engine and a self recording level for surveyors. The list goes on and on in fascinating variety, with each movement clarified and illustrated.

Un très joli livre technique illustré comme au 19ième sciècle avec une multitude de planches décrivant autant de mécanismes. Chacune des cinq cent situations laisse imaginer un mouvement insolite. On en redemande…

This book, really just a collection of poor tiny line drawings and brief descriptions, is hardly worth anything.
Impressive title though…

it has too many similar mechanical thoughts/pictures and the picure quality is poor. I know persons picture/diagrams are very ancient, and the printing itself is not the problem. My desires were for documentation on the mathamatics of design, not simple drawings with a paragraph of description.

This book is a huge disappointment. The take in is modern and promises a high-quality treatment of an appealing theme but the inside is ridiculously simplistic and leaves an dreadful lot to the reader to figure out on his own. The extremely abbreviated text is arcane and the “pictures” are no more than primitive line drawings. In many cases, this is woefully inadequate to know what’s going on. This 1868 book belongs in the “Antiques” section. It was a huge disappointment and simply annoying.
