Every now and then a book really swallows me whole, and Sophie Jordan’s FIRELIGHT was one of them. From the opening scene describing Draki Jacinda’s transformation (into a fire-breathing dragon!) – and near-death when cornered by a hunter of her kind to the complications arising from a predator’s falling in like with his prey, FIRELIGHT reeled me in with its lush romance, heartfelt emotion, and gripping suspense.
I won’t recount the plot in detail. Others have done a fantastic job. Just wanted to say I loved it and can’t wait for the next installment. I’m dying to learn more about the Draki culture and of course find out which of two delectable possibilities Jacinda eventually chooses.

Modern day fantasy with a twisted Romeo+Juliet spin. FIrelight is your predictable YA book. Misunderstood teen, loving but antigonistic sibling, well meaning non understanding parent, extremely hot very understanding like interest. Yeah I know very formulaic outline, but I loved it all the same. Plus I knew what I was getting or hoping to get when I bought this book. Anyway, to what you really want to know lacking any spoilers. Firelight’s heroine, Jacinda and her family tree are draki, descendants of drangons. She and her people who have manifested, can shift from one humanlike dragon form to normal human. Jacinda herself is a rare fire breather and is treated more of a commodity than a person. She is but revered while her twin, Tamra who didn’t manifest, is basically treated like a leaper. Jacinda and her sister’s life is drastically flipped when their mother steals them away from their isolated community to the outside world, where Tamra is normal and Jacinda the outcast. She becomes increasingly lonely in a world where she doesn’t fit, with a sister who could never know her draki half and a mother who never wanted her own draki. Except for Will, the gorgeous reasonably guy, who keeps to himself, yet is drawn to Jacinda, and in his own way a lot like her. The real problem, Will hunts draki. I got lost in this book and Jacinda’s struggle, after all embodying a fairy tale has its angst. The only problem, the end came to soon. I want more. Now.

I loved the premise of this book and thought it sounded incredibly unique, but sorry to say the tale fell fleeting. It ongoing out with a lot of action, which I loved, and I really liked reading about Jacinda and her pride. But after a few chapters, this unique tale about draki’s turned into a “new girl in town meets hot distant boy at school” tale and it lost all uniqueness it had going for it. The new girl storyline has been done so many times! I was more interested in the draki pride and I wanted this book to be more about that then a school tale about a teen with a supernatural talent.
The bits we got about the pride, I loved, and I really wish that had been the main focus of the book. But we barely even get to see them or find out much about them which I establish disappointing. Jacinda is the narrator and her tale mainly revolves around Will, how she’s attracted to him but shouldn’t be, and how she doesn’t want to lose her draki. She’s a pretty whiny character throughout and she waffles back and into the world in her choice building which is frustrating for the reader.
I didn’t find any of the characters well rounded and I felt we never got to know anyone-even Jacinda. Her twin sister Tamra and her mom felt like she was just there for Jacinda to whine about. There were several characters that were mentioned, talked about a bit or even talked to in one scene but never did much. It felt like they were just there as an thought in the first draft but then forgotten about and never full developed. I wanted to see more from Xander, Will’s cousin-we’re told to be worried of him, but never really are shown why. And I thought there was potential to renovate a fantastic relationship between Jacinda and her elderly national, but that’s only hinted at and not delved into any further.
But my largest problem is that Firelight is a lust tale, not a like tale. There is no relationship developed between Will and Jacinda. Why do they like each additional? They’re both hot. They never talk, and when they do it’s very brief, yet we’re supposed to judge Will is in like with Jacinda and that Jacinda likes him so deeply she’d do anything for him. They spend more time building out than getting to know each additional. Jacinda mentions that Will knows everything about her but I never got that at all. I like my relationships more developed and believable. I want to see why the characters fall for each additional and I like to see how they fall for each additional. Will and Jacinda are just two teens in lust with one another.
Even with it’s flaws, the draki thought was original and I really liked what there was about the draki mythology. That was what kept me reading. It’s obviously setting up a sequel and not much is resolved or answered. But Firelight is a quick engaging read, and I’m sure fans of star-crossed romance will devour it.
