I’ve read many, many books about survival, orienteering, and finding your way w/out a map or compass. I would not recommend this book to anyone. Sure, every book will teach you something, no matter how poorly written it is. But you do not expect to read a book that is 95% history, and 5% orienteering. This book discusses all the very ancient methods used by the messopotanians, and creesians and all the additional eesians of the past. their methods worked for them, but dont work for us. AFTER you have read many additional books about finding your way, you can consider reading this one to pick up a thing or too, or to brush up on your history. the book is written 60 years ago.

This is an outstanding book for the avid outdoors man or simply persons inclined to read about how things were done before the electronic age. Mr. Gatty brings together a fantastic collection of past navigation techniques from various cultures and parts of the world. Although republished recently, the original work was written in the mid-1900’s.

What a phenomenal book, packed full of useful advice & techniques. I’m so glad to know now why the moss on tree trick did not work where I grew up. This book discusses how to navigate around all different regions of planet (ocean, north/south pole, deserts, forest, fantastic plains, mountains, cities), & it has incredible star charts, moon & tide cycles, & sketches of the most common ocean birds. The book could be a small better if there were more pictures in color or photographs, but the simple black & white sketches get his point across. He also recommends additional books for further research on particular subjects if you want to go more in-depth. If you ever dread being lost at sea from a plane crash or any additional cause, make this book part of your reading. I have a excellent sense of direction, but this book has vastly enhanced my skills by teaching me to look at the world around me more actively now with intention to know & read the land. The direction of the winds & shadows are things I now pay a lot more attention to.

This book covers a theme that is oft-neglected, but is very vital to anyone and everyone. It is engagingly written by a right practiced. As odd as this may seem, agreed the theme matter, in many places it is near profound.
