Lacking the evil vampire Bishop ruling over the town of Morganville, the resident vampires have made major concessions to the human population. With their newfound freedoms, Claire Danvers and her friends are nearly starting to feel comfortable again…
Now Claire can really concentrate on her studies, and her friend Eve joins the local theatre company. But when one of Eve’s castmates goes missing after starting work on a fleeting documentary, Eve suspects the worst. Claire and Eve soon realize that this film project, whose theme is the vampires themselves, is a whole lot larger-and way more treacherous-than anyone suspected.

I can’t judge that I’m going to be adage this about Morganville Vampires, but hey, I really can’t help it: Fade Out DISAPPOINTED me. It really did. Gone is the mystery of the first two books, the terror of the third one, and the frenetic and apocalyptic pace of books 4, 5 and 6. In Fade Out, we don’t find a real plot, nor do we find dread or anything else, for that matter. It seems to me now that Morganville is not a town of horror anymore, but a circus full of clowns. The characters that used to be dreadful (Oliver, Myrnin) are now constant object of jokes. That would be excellent if, you know, there was a excellent source of horror elsewhere, but there is not. The action scenes are dull, and the only real thing happening in the plot is Claire’s jealousy of Kim over Shane. Which is not a excellent enough plot to keep a book going. Carpe Corpus, book 6 in the saga, had a really excellent and FINAL ending. I wish Rachel Caine had left it at that, because this is a poor excuse of a book, and I’m not sure I’ll keep reading the next installments if Rachel keeps goofing around like this.

Amelie’s evil brother Bishop temporarily took over Morganville; a town where vampires and humans co-exist, but blood suckers are on top of the food chain. But, recently Bishop was defeated. His vampiric allies have been routed also and Amelie’s cronies have loosened the rules giving more freedom and rights to the humans; and protection to blood donors. Amelie is the Protector of Claire Danvers, who with her boyfriend Steve, her BFF Evie and Eve’s boyfriend Michael the vampire like to keep life in Morganville on an even keel.
But peace is not to be establish. Some humans are trying to ruin the vampires; a computer is out of control, and a videographer is taking pictures that could expose the vampires. Ada the computer wants to kill Claire who she believes wants her ex- lover Myrnin back when she was a vampire before she became the computer’s brain. She wants a war so she can have Myrnin all to herself. Myrnin is more out of control than usual and could become a danger to the vampires even though he is one himself. Claire and her followers must find and ruin the video devices hidden all over town spying on the people, disable Ada, find out what is incorrect with Myrnin and find the person who is giving insider information to the enemy if she and her BFFs are to save Morganville.
The latest Morganville vampire novel FADE OUT is full of drama, pathos, and a touch of romance with characters larger than life especially the teens who have to be in order to survive in a town run by vampires. Claire is the de facto leader who makes decisions for herself and her friends. Although some of the bite is gone with Bishop vanquished, much of his sting is replaced by the danger of the photos exposing the vampires and the computer going crazy. The most fascinating part of Rachel Caine’s latest Morganville book is the millennia ancient vampire who experiments on the human-vampire species while keeping a distance from them to avoid the dreaded ennui depression. This is a must read for teens and adults.

Fade Out is the 7th round in the Morganville Vampires series and it never stop to amaze. I’ll be honest with you, I was kind of frightened the tale would get ancient with Bishop gone and most enemies under control but I was incorrect! Caine surprised us with a groundbreaking new twist in the Morganville saga, and I never saw it coming. I find myself craving for the next book, impatient to know what Caine’s got up her sleeve.
I find it hard to resume the plot of that book lacking giving spoilers so I will refrain from doing it, but you have to know there is one new character introduced in the series. Kim, another goth girl in town, plays in the city’s last production with Eve, and she’s hiding more then anyone suspects.
Kim is very well loved, loved by everyone but Claire can’t stand the sight (or thought) of her. Does it have to do with the fact that she dated Shane in the past?
Our favorite vampires are indeed at the rendez-vous with more suspense and inventiveness, and Mirnin really stole my heart in that instalment. I like his craziness, corkiness and uniqueness. The guy wears 17th century clothing with fanged-bunny slippers. Do I need to say more?
Ada will also play a larger part this time, for better or for worst!
If you haven’t selected that series yet, it is a fantastic vampire series that detach from the vampire romance stream. Vampires aren’t “vegetarian”, nice or sexy (ok Michael is…), they are treacherous, vicious and can’t be trusted. They will scare you, imprison you and tax you (in blood indeed).
Welcome to Morganville!
