Brandon Mull Interviews Raxtus the Dragon
Raxtus, a fairy dragon, is much smaller than the average winged reptiles that you may encounter in the Fablehaven series. He was raised by fairies, and can turn invisible at will. Find out how he wages war against the centaurs with the help of a young fairy named Kendra in Fablehaven: Secrets of the Dragon Sanctuary.
Brandon: Thanks for consenting to this interview.
Raxtus: I’m open to new experiences. Within reason.
Brandon: You are not a predictable dragon.
Raxtus: Wow! So much for tiny talk. No, to my fantastic bring shame on, I was incubated and raised by fairies, so I sparkle and I’m much smaller than average. Also, my breath weapon is a joke. Among additional things, it makes flowers bruise. Enough humiliation? I could go on.
Brandon: You feel like additional dragons don’t see you as an equal?
Raxtus: I get it. My humiliation remains incomplete. No, additional dragons see me as ridiculous. My dad is a really huge, vital dragon, which heightens my disgrace, and also clarifies why I remain alive. Few dragons would willingly cross my dad.
Brandon: Unlike many dragons, you have befriended humans.
Raxtus: I delight in humans. Since dragons rejected me, I get some of my vicarious thrills by spying on human culture. I like action movies.
Brandon: You can get into a theater?
Raxtus: In a pinch, yes. Regularly I’ll just find a drive-in. They’re a dying breed, but they’re still around. Not the best sound, but I delight in the open atmosphere. You want to talk movies? I could go for hours.
Brandon: Some additional time. I know that you aren’t confined to a particular dragon sanctuary.
Raxtus: Right. I delight in Wyrmroost, and spend more time here than at any additional sanctuaries, but I am free to roam the world, including many preserves that others cannot access.
Brandon: What is the purpose of these preserves?
Raxtus: Don’t you know?
Brandon: I’m just trying to inform the uninitiated.
Raxtus: Gotcha. For centuries, the magical creatures around the world have been gathered to secret wildlife refuges. Some remain in the wild, but most have retired to these hidden preserves. Dragons and some of the more powerful creatures reside in special preserves called dragon sanctuaries. Is that enough?
Brandon: Perfect. You know Kendra Sorenson.
Raxtus: She’s a credit to humankind. And fairykind. I’m a fan.
Brandon: And you’ve met Warren.
Raxtus: Don’t remind me. I’m permanently finding new ways to embarrass myself. I’ve turned it into an art form.
Brandon: Where do you see yourself in ten years?
Raxtus: Ten years is a blink for a dragon. We live a long time. It would be like me asking where you see yourself in ten hours.
Brandon: Asleep.
Raxtus: I get it. You want an answer. I’ve permanently wanted to write, or maybe paint, or I might finally enroll in grad school. I’m kidding. Told you I’ve studied humans! A real answer? I’ll probably still be lurking around, hopefully inching toward seeming a tad more dragonly.
Brandon: What is your favorite food?
Raxtus: I like food! Don’t get me ongoing. So many flavors! It depends on my mood. Lately I’ve been into hippopotamus. It has to be fresh. Aurochs are excellent.
Brandon: Remind me what aurochs are?
Raxtus: Kind of like giant bulls. Really meaty.
Brandon: I reflect we’d get along. I’m into steak.
Raxtus: I take mine really rare. Like recently breathing.
Brandon: How do dragons view additional magical creatures?
Raxtus: Most dragons are well aware that they’re alpha predators, top of the food chain. The sharks of the sky. We’re only threatened by additional dragons, and perhaps the most powerful wizards. Many creatures become paralyzed in our presence, including humans. Dragons generally view additional creatures as food. But dragons like to consider themselves intellectuals. If a creature can engage the intellect of a dragon, it might survive an encounter. The catch? It can be hard to hold a stimulating conversation when you’re paralyzed.
Brandon: Some dragons have human avatars. They can take human shape.
Raxtus: Right. Some dragons frown on the thought. Others find fantastic amusement in the exercise. I have no human avatar. Which might be a excellent thing. If I did, I might rarely use my dragon form.
Brandon: You really like humans.
Raxtus: Shameful as it may sound, I do. Among dragons, I’m alone in that opinion.
Brandon: Do dragons particularly dislike humans?
Raxtus: Some do, mostly because wizards tend to use human form. Many dragons give humanoids small thought, considering them vermin if anything. A few dragons have kept human pets or servants, but not usually due to a like for humanity. A particular human might occasionally find favor with a particular dragon.
Brandon: But most dragons would just eat humans.
Raxtus: Absolutely.
Brandon: This has been enlightening. Any parting thoughts?
Raxtus: Stay away from dragons. I may seem friendly, but I’m an exception to the rule. Even I sometimes savor the smell of humans. I abstain from eating people for philosophical rather than gastronomical reasons.
Brandon: Thanks for talking with me.
Raxtus: Anytime.

“Secrets of the Dragon Sanctuary” continues Brandon Mull’s Fablehaven mythos at an enjoyably brisk pace. In our world, a stingbulb is the part of a stinging insect that holds its venom. In Mull’s, a stingbulb is a rare fruit that can flawlessly imitate human life. Herokinder Kendra and Seth Sorenson find it even harder to know whom to trust, but the oft-bickering siblings find new power together when facing down some of fiction’s truly imaginative villains. Seth takes his largest risk yet, Kendra has her heart broken in a stunning turn, and they lean on each additional while facing down the awesome champions of Wyrmroost and its Dragon Temple. The way Seth befriends the giantest of giants is truly enjoyable, only to be topped by Kendra meeting Raxtus the fairy dragon.
The chief shortcoming of this tale is its unrealistic handling of the faux death of Kendra. Early in the book, Kendra is tricked into pricking herself with a stingbulb. She is kidnapped with the duplicate left behind to confuse her family tree and Knights of the Dawn friends. Stingbulb copies live only for a few days, and Seth and his family tree judge Kendra has died. When Kendra manages to escape her captives, the leader seemingly forgets that the first thing she normally would do is contact her parents. They are left to, invisibly to the tale, mourn Kendra throughout “Secrets of the Dragon Sanctuary,” and the issue is hardly breached in the remaining hundreds of pages.
While reading the quick-moving adventures, one may struggle with the glaring omission. It’s especially hard to swallow when it’s clear Kendra knows her parents judge she is dead. Such a problem could have been addressed in fleeting order. Clearly, it’s problematic when her parents had a body to bury. Do the reuniting when everyone was better prepared to deal with the consequences–such as, how to clarify the corpse? But it still might be hard to swallow any child who could live with allowing her parents to judge she was dead.
This is an unfortunate flaw in an otherwise fine series. The leader Mull, as his series develops, puts less and less effort into explicating the problems of being children who can see magical creatures when the parents cannot. He rumor has it that establish it more convenient to gut the parents’ character development, which is kinda hard to swallow for some of us parents.

PLEASE DON’T READ THIS IF YOU HAVEN’T READ THE BOOK YET!!! Truthfully, I loved the book. I reflect it was the best book in the series (and that’s adage a lot). I became very attached to a lot of the characters. Maybe to attached. I liked that Seth was able to come on the adventure to. I didn’t like, though, how Mara and Trask were able to speak to the dragon and go. In the third book, I thought it was incredible that Kendra was able to talk to the dragon. But now it seems not that huge of a deal. I really liked the fairy dragon. I liked how he got to shine at the end. (Factually.
Like I said before, I became really attached to the characters, including warren (permanently liked him) Kendra and Seth even more than before. Also, Vanessa, Tanu, and Gavin establish my interest. That’s why it was such a shock at the end. I was reading it at night (I stayed up late to end it) And then they announced that he wasn’t a dragon brother but a real dragon. I was in shock. I though, OK maybe Kendra will look at him differently now, but he’s still that sweet innocent stutterer boy who I want to see be her boy friend. Incorrect. I was very mad when he ATE Dogan and KILLED (nearly at lease) Mara. I thought it was because dragons are less forgiving in dragon form or something like that. Nope. When he ongoing acting mean, that sweet small boy, and then announced that he was a demon prince dragon who had been in the silent box and nearly ruined fablehaven. I cried. Really, I did it was so said.I felt Kendra’s pain and shock and thoughts of treachery.I’m Kendra’s age, so I know how she feels.I was hart broken that this small boy of whom I was so fond of , was a dragon, a demon. Additional than that said part the book was fantastic. Except for how he leaves you hanging. I can’t wait for the next book. I will keep reading!!

I keenly anticipated this book!
The well conceived world where fantastic creatures still exist but are largely confined to secret reserves is a fun way to place our own world behind. I had correctly predicted who Gavin was and to which side he was loyal but that knowledge didn’t keep me from enjoying the thrilling dragon ride!
Seth gains new abilities in this installment that catches him up to his sister in many ways and Kendra and Seth now seem to be perfect compliments to each additional, each having their specialties that allow them to fight for against the society of the evening star.
The only things that I am questioning is Warrens injury resulting in him playing only a very tiny part in this book. I still predict that he is the right mate for Kendra. I also am not crazy about the hint at the end of the book that Kendra and Seth’s parents will play a larger role in the fifth and final book.
