This was a very helpful study guide. I probably would not have done as well on the exam lacking using this.

This is a worst study guide ever. it doesn’t take in everything. When I heard that this is the most well loved book that everyone use to study for the HESI exam, I was thinking that this is all I need to study to be prepare, but please, be warned, that this book is not all you need to pass the test.

Like the additional posters have mentioned, there are enough typos and grammar errors in the book to be a distraction, but, the test is written by the same people, so at least you’ll be prepared to take a poorly written test.
At my college, we didn’t take the chemisty/biology sections of the test.
I’ve taken and passed the HESI now, and in retrospect, the math section of the book was worthwhile – the grammar and vocab seemed like a waste of time. You really can’t “cram” for a vocab or grammar test – you either know it or you don’t.
Like additional posters have mentioned, the “critical thinking” part of the test is really unfair – it isn’t covered in this book, and somehow, a name lacking any background or knowledge of protocols is supposed to infer the right actions. My favorite “critical thinking” question was one that went along the lines of (this is a made up scenario, for illustration purposes)…
- you’re a nurse, and you have a heart uncomplaining eating a double-cheeseburger, an asthmatic sneaking a cigarette, and a liver uncomplaining taking tequila shots … prioritize these patients…
Um, suicide wasn’t a choice – and if I’m the nurse, I’m going to continue reading the sports section while these fools kill themselves…

This guide was VERY helpful for the following subjects – math, grammar, vocab, and reading comprehension. The study guide was dead on with the test. The only additional theme we were tested on was critical thinking, and it was not covered in this book. I hope they will add it in the future. (You may want to browse through an NCLEX prep guide to prepare for the critical thinking section!)
