In the rush, rush, rush of too-much-to-do-and-no-time-to-do-it, the all-vital, nurturing aspects of parenthood can easily disappear. Jon Kabat-Zinn, leader of Wherever You Go, There You Are and Myla Kabat-Zinn have collaborated on Everyday Blessings, a book that approaches parenting from the Zen Buddhist position of moment-to-moment awareness. It’s a gorgeous presentation and a thoughtful approach to mindful meditation that will help you slow down, enrich your life as a parent, and nourish the internal life of your children.

While the thoughts open in this book are intriguing, their thoughts are not for anyone who is at home with tiny children. Finding time to contemplate life and have the deep, fulfilling thoughts suggested by the authors may be possible, but only by a name who does not have fantastic demands on their time. Too deep, too touchy-feely, too goody-goody, this book just comes off as being too excellent to be right. I wish I could get my money back.

Jon Kabbot Zin has the unbelievable ease of describing how to change your entire self in a reading. If you follow his perfect translation of Zen and Buddhism you can apply immediately to everyday life. I owe him a fantastic thank you for saving my self!!!

I was hoping this book would help me learn to be a cooler, more uncomplaining, and contented parent. While there were lots of examples, I felt this book was rambling and didn’t really give me practical help.

Having read and painstakingly loved, “Wherever You Go, There You Are,” I was excited to read “Everyday Blessings”. I could not have been more disappointed. As a parent, I was looking for concrete examples of mindful parenting. The book felt preachy and at times, condescending. There are additional books out there that are much more helpful if you are looking for techniques to improve your parenting, such as “Buddhism For Mothers” (fantastic for Dads too!).

I read this book when I was 2 months pregnant with my first child. Now at 11 months ancient, I plot on rereading it. I’m a practicing Buddhist, so this fit with my belief. But, everyone can benefit from reading this book. People of all faiths can certainly tell. I passed it on to my sister, who is a Christian, and she had the same praise. Read it.
