Product Description
This perfectly written, heartfelt memoir touched a nerve among both readers and reviewers. Elizabeth Gilbert tells how she made the hard choice to place behind all the trappings of modern American success (marriage, house in the country, career) and find, as a replacement for, what she truly wanted from life. Setting out for a year to study three different aspects of her scenery amid three different cultures, Gilbert explored the art of pleasure in Italy and the art of devotion in India, and then a balance between the two on the Indonesian island of Bali. By turns rapturous and rueful, this wise and amusing leader (whom Booklist calls “Anne Lamott’s hip, yoga- practicing, footloose younger sister”) is poised to garner yet more adoring fans.

It is hard for me as a Blak Womyn to know what it is that gives white women the right to appropriate spirituality. I’ve read this book and find that she is not adage anything new. Everybody knows she’s not adage anything new. I find it incredible that a privileged white supremacist feminine patriarch has been on Oprah. I will no longer watch Oprah. The show is not for me in the first place. It’s for white women. White women have taken the reigns of white supremacy in its “evolved form” from white men and have made a bee-line to whatever safehaven Blak Womyn had in Spirit.
First white women and men, abhored Christianity because their attempt to use it as a tool of oppression back fired on them. Now this “New Age” bull corn has been gaining popularity. The spear-headers are whites and so-called jews.
What whites are running from is taking responsibility for their nonstop oppression of Blak Womyn. Black men are O.K. and have been for some time because they’ve taken the master’s language and expressed openly their contempt for Blak Womyn. Look at Antwone Fisher.
I have been on a spiritual journey to rid myself of white supremacist thought, actions, and words. No one thinks it’s vital though.
What makes this woman who seems to be self deprecating and humble. Her cander is just to pull you in. There is a distinct tone of arrogance in the writing. How can a racist white woman receive God’s like? I don’t judge it is possible. I beleive whites are grasping for straws out of a dread they don’t know but know why it’s there.
This book was nothing more than exploitation of additional cultures spirituality. I liked how she talked about the Indian girl Tilsa as if she were a perculiar object.
What I remember is that america has permanently pondered the god question because innate need to steal, kill, and ruin. You have to ease the dissonance by telling and convincing everyone that what you did was right. You don’t make an apology to a generation of gorgeous people for the psychological and physical terrorist acts. You just make for yourself a new god that condones your actions.

I have permanently loved Barbar Kingsolver’s books and this is no exception. The book deals with the family tree living with minimal outside resources.

I have not yet read the book – it is queued up. But glancing through parts of it, seems to be a well-written and an appealing composition.
