Once I had selected this book up I was trapped by a plain tale of the serpemts/dragons demise and the intricate tale of different races and interactions. The only slightly odd aside within the tale was the pigeon post between towns that I establish to be slightly destractimg and really un-needed as far as the tale line went. I hadn’t realised it was the first of a trilogy and not a tale with a satisfactory ending as it left you at the start of a Dragons journy. Now I need the next book before i’ve forgotten the imtracasies of the first. Come on Robin when is it due!

just not that excellent. the characters are pretty uninteresting compared to the additional trilogies. and frankly i do not like the dragons at all.

Yes, I still gave it four stars, because I liked it, but it was much shorter and less complex than her previous works. The Kindle formatting was pretty terrible, too.

Robin Hobb continues her streak of brilliant books with Dragon Keeper.
Set in the same world as her Assassin’s Apprentice series, I was excited to read this.
No spoilers here, but the book starts slow (as a lot of her books do) but gets better as you get further along.
If you like Assassin’s Apprentice or the Soldier’s son trilogy, then I would fervently recommend this book to you.

“Dragon Keeper: Volume one of The Rain Wilds Chronicles” by Robin Hobb
The serpents that were herded up the Rain Wild River to be cocooned have now hatched into Dragons but things are not as they were supposed to be. As a replacement for of creatures that are practically self sufficient from birth, these dragons are mere shadows of what they should have become. Whether it was from too long at sea or too fleeting of an incubation period in their cocoons, the result is the same; the dragons are deformed and unable to care for themselves and are completely reliant on humans and the only right dragon left, Tintaglia. Tintaglia has since establish another right dragon and her attention is consumed leaving all care of the dragons to the humans which is not a tiny task and many have grown weary of the job…
Dragon Keeper although slow at times is another levelheaded tale by Hobb. For persons who have not read Hobb before I do not recommend starting with Dragon Keeper. The tale told in Dragon Keeper is directly related to the “Robin Hobb’s Liveship Traders Trilogy (3 Mass Market Paper Backs Ship of Magic, Mad Ship & Ship of Destiny)” and to events taking place in “Fool’s Errand; Golden Fool; Fool’s Fate. (The Tawny Man Trilogy)”. You can start here lacking a problem but you would miss out on a fantastic deal if you did.
The Excellent: With all Hobb’s tales her writing and ability to draw characters of interest and of fantastic depth are what make this another success. As a rule of thumb Robin Hobb’s tales are character driven with events taking place along the way. I’m not sure how she does it but I find myself engrossed in her tales even when there isn’t a lot going on.
The Terrible: For persons unfamiliar with her writing or persons who need an action beat every couple of pages, this or any of Hobb’s work may seem slow or potentially even dull at times. This will all depend on your personal reading taste.
Overall: If you are a fan of Hobb’s previous work then you will likely delight in Dragon Keeper as well. For persons new to Hobb I recommend starting with “Ship of Magic (The Liveship Traders, Book 1)” or “Assassin’s Apprentice (The Farseer Trilogy, Book 1)”
