I give this a 4.5. My wife and I got a 12 month ancient guide that had not been trained. We bought several books, took her to a teacher, and nothing seemed to work. We ongoing using this book and got very excellent results in quick time. Our dog is very responsive to this kind of training, and we are grateful for the monks’ delightful book.

This is a fantastic book. The beginning has a brief intro on their all-purpose philosophy on dogs and training dogs. The rest (I reflect–I’m really only 2/3 the way through) consists of 5-10 pages each on a point dog that came to them with behaviour problems. They talk about the dog, then they talk in detail about what they did for that point dog and owner.
This book is also fantastic because of the pictures. There are tons of fantastic colorful pictures of the dogs in each scenario. They also have step-by-step pictures of the monks training the dogs to do certian things (sit, stay, come, heel).
This is not an all-inclusive guide on how to train and raise a dog. For that, I would recommend “Raising Your Dog with the Monks of New Skete”. This complements that, or any additional proper training book, very well. Fantastic book.

The Art of Raising a Puppy is classic but I like this book too. I have permanently been around dogs that had behavior issues and I establish this book inspirational and so needed! It is also written with clarity, humor and kindness.

The book is of the quality I’ve come to expect from the Monks at New Skeet. I appreciate the training tips and anecdotes which reinforce their philosophy of the relationship between canines and humans.
