Product Description
When Evie Walker goes home to spend time with her dying father, she discovers that his creaky ancient house in Hope’s Fort, Colorado, is not the only legacy she stands to inherit. Hidden behind the ancient basement door is a secret and magical storeroom, a place where wondrous treasures from myth and legend are kept safe until they are needed again. The magic of the storeroom prevents access to any who are not proposed to use the items. But just because it has never been done does not mean it cannot be done.
And there are certainly persons who will give anything to find a way in.
Evie must guard the storeroom against very ancient and malicious forces, protecting the past and the future even as the present unravels around them. Ancient heroes and notorious villains alike will rise to fight on her side or to undermine her most desperate gambits. At stake is the fate of the world, and the prevention of nothing less than the apocalypse. In the same month, along with this all-new hardcover, Tor will publish a new novel in Carrie Vaughn’s well loved, New York Times bestselling urban fantasy series featuring werewolf talk radio host, Fund Norville. Fund Goes to War will be the eighth book in this successful mass market series.

This book is a departure from Vaughn’s Fund Norville series and seems more reminiscent of Sherrilyn Kenyon with its mythology, long suffering, studly hero and average, yet strong heroine. The book is disjointed, thought provoking, awkward and ends in better place for a beginning. The romance is to some extent secondary and is a silent falling in like so the book does contain traces of Vaughn. If the purpose of the book was to primarily serve as back tale for something new, it could be a beginning of a fantastic new series. The tale was strong, even if you feel detached from it. Since it is supposed to be a stand alone book, I’m left wanting.
Like a previous reviewer stated, there isn’t a lot about the actual plot that can be told lacking giving some of the tale away. The book description gives you about as much information as is safe to tell.
Edited to add: I read Vaughn’s blog post about the relief of this book. Rumor has it that, Discord’s Apple is the closest she has come to writing a book with autobiographical information. If that is the case, I marvel if she was too close to the tale.

This is an epic tale starting with the fall of Troy and continuing through some possible “future”. Nicely done villains some of which are a bit ambiguous Several appealing premisses and some well done humor. The apparent villain turns out to be sort of a excellent guy. (The plot is very well done and written and I am not going to intrude spoilers.)
The characters are very well done even the bit players.
Overall an original and fantastic read, just not in the current “mainstream” dark fantasy vein.

I’m a fan of mythology and Carrie Vaughn’s Fund series so I was very excited when I establish out about Discord’s Apple. I absolutely like it. I didn’t want it to end. Certainly one of my favorite books.

I knew from her “Fund Norville” series that Carrie Vaughn is a talented writer. Still, within the first few pages of “Discord’s Apple” it became clear that she is, in fact, a consummate storyteller. This book is wildly imaginative, compelling, and clever; truly, it’s one of the best tales I’ve ever read.
Vaughn revisits several beloved tales and myths, juxtaposing them a grim, conflict-torn modern reality. There are really multiple, connected tales here, all overlapping each additional in a fluid tapestry that gradually unveils the characters’ pasts, their motivations and fates.
Normally, I’m slow to warm up to Vaughn’s books, requiring a few chapters before I’m captivated by the tale. This time, it took just a few sentences into Vaughn’s recreation of the Trojan War for me to know that this book is unlike anything else I’ve read lately — in a wonderful way. Brilliant characters and creative plot aside, the writing is superb. Forceful prose, exceptional imagery … not one sentence is superfluous or wasted. Indeed, each scene is packed with meaning and possibilities, I could read this book a dozen times before I’ve absorbed it all.
In fleeting, this is absolutely a masterpiece.

I was apprehensive about paying so much for a book – and I bought the Kindle version! I despise to waste money on something that I’ll only read a few pages of before putting down. Since I’ve been out of work, I really have been much pickier with my purchasing choices. But, I had a gift card and really needed to read something that would lift me out of all the daily clogged doors and dirty floors. So I took a chance and bought it.
This book was a wonderful suprise. And I shouldn’t have been suprised – Carrie Vaughn is a wonderful writier, as the success of her “Fund” books attest.
I won’t say anything about the book’s plot, because it doesn’t matter. If you start reading, you won’t be disappointed. I judge this writer could make ANYthing appealing and meaningful.
