The leader, a self-proclaimed world renowned practiced, provides a litany of “reasons” underlying ADD, ADHD, Dyslexia and a host of additional neurological disorders. His work is filled with unsubstantiated conjecture – including blaming absentee parenting, childhood obesity, television and computer games. His tome is filled with speculative thoughts and persons he has clearly stolen from striaghtforward cognitive behavioral therapy. He manages to include case studies, including a shocking one in which a ten year ancient boy “Patrick”, clealry suffering from a serious psychological episode, is brought to his office by his ill informed parents – when he should have seen a child psychologist / child psychiatrist immediately.
Melillo, who is a doctor of chiropractic, describes himself as a chiropractic neurologist. He has no published research in any medical journal and no appreciable experience in treating childhood neurological disorders. The book is not footnoted and his clear aim is to support his chain of “Barin Balance” centers across the United States. A parent may glean some useful tips about behavior modification, but, the advice agreed is so broad as to be essentially useless. He also dives into the tired “toxin” realm as a causative to neurological disorders. He provides no evidence supporting this aver.
Don’t waste your time. This leader is a shameless self-promoter who presupposes to catalog all of the trendy neurological ills attributed to children lacking a shred of evidence. His back jacket makes enough of a statement to warn the reader away. His fleeting shrift of computer games belies any understanding of the genre and really is contrdicted by the current literature. At times I felt like I was listening to a childless uncle who sought to educate me on raising my children.
“Based upon years of scientific research and used to treat approximately 1,000 children to date”. And yet we find no published studies, no peer reviews and only brief and regularly distrubing case studies.

I have two children, ages 6 and 9 on the spectrum. I heard Dr.Melillo speak on a PBS special and immediately ordered the book. The book was simple to know and really connected some dots for me. We had tried a few of the things in the book at the suggestion of an O/T awhile back but what a difference it is building to have all the pieces to the program. We cannot afford to go to one of the actual clinics for treatment and the book is a fantastic substitute for that.

Disconnected Kids has finally made sense of understanding children with learning disabilities, ADHD, and spectrum disorders. It is an simple read and gives fantastic insight and immediate thoughts to remediate kids with these disorders. I know know why my kids do what they do.

Groundbreaking indeed!
This is a wonderful combination of current science and common sense.
In the first half of the book Dr. Melillo gives a very clear and logical explanation of the origin of these neurological disorders. He blends the massive documentation of the 4,000 scientific references from his earlier book Neurobehavioral Disorders of Childhood into a simple and understandable narrative that is functional for any parent with a high school education.
In the second half he takes the sophisticated applications that are fully understood by only a very few doctors and lays out a home based therapy program that can be personalized and easily implemented. The outcomes are impressive. The techniques taught for home use make help affordable for everyone.
Everyone who is serious about building stable improvement for children with these neurological disorders should buy this book. No doubt they too will want to share their successes with others who face similar challenges.
