Product Description
William Peter Blatty has tickled generations of readers with his iconic mega-bestseller The Exorcist. Now Blatty gives us Dimiter, a riveting tale of murder, revenge, and suspense. Laced with themes of faith and like, sin and forgiveness, vengeance and compassion, it is a novel in the grand tradition of Morris West’s The Devil’s Advocate and the Catholic novels of Graham Greene.
Dimiter opens in the world’s most oppressive and isolated totalitarian state: Albania in the 1970s. A prisoner suspected of being an enemy agent is held by state security. An unsettling presence, though subjected to unimaginable torture he maintains an eerie silence. He escapes—and on the way to freedom, completes a mysterious mission. The prisoner is Dimiter, the American agent from Hell.”
The scene shifts to Jerusalem, focusing on Hadassah Hospital and a cast of engaging, colorful characters: the brooding Christian Arab police detective, Peter Meral; Dr. Moses Mayo, a troubled but humorous neurologist; Samia, an attractive, sharp-tongued nurse; and assorted American and Israeli functionaries and hospital staff. All become enmeshed in a series of baffling, inexplicable deaths, until events explode in a surprising climax.
Told with inexorable pace, Dimiter’s compelling, page-turning narrative is haunted by the search for faith and the truths of the human condition. Dimiter is William Peter Blatty’s first full novel since the 1983 publication of Legion.

William Peter Blatty is, of course, the leader who brought us “The Exorcist”, one of the best pieces of supernatural literature ever. But he’s also the leader of “The Ninth Configuration” and “John Goldfarb, Please Come Home”, so his work is inconsistent, to say the least.
I’d have to say, if you’re considering buying this book, reflect “Configuration”, not “Exorcist”.
It was weird, frankly. I finally gave up after about 100 pages, as I stated in the title of this review, and nearly nothing happened during persons hundred pages.
Characters ruminating on morality and the scenery of evil; that seemed to be about it.
I thought the writing style didn’t help much, either: dense and soporific.
All in all, I wish I’d directed my money elsewhere.

Sorry to say I can’t give this book a excellent review. It didn’t make a lot of sense to me. Each section seemed like it was from a different book and I thought the ending was rushed. It was like he needed to end it and just stuck a quick chapter on to try to wrap things up. I do reflect Blatty is a excellent artist and I have liked several of his books in the past. I was looking forwards to reading this but I am sorry to say I felt it was a waste of time. I’m a small surprised at some of the reviews here. I hope his next book is better.

I read the ‘Exhorist’ and this is not even close;
the book was in large print(299 pages);read the book in 2 nights because it was suspenseful.
Many fleeting chapters that swirled the reader around in fog.
The end wasn’t very satisfying maybe it was because I didn’t really like any of the characters.
If you are not into reading about torture this isn’t the book for you; most of the
first 70 pages deals with cruelty that defies imagination.
Reasonably frankly I did not need to be reminded about man’s inhumanity to man, in the communist regime, in such plain detail.
It is a mystery/spy thriller with some biblical references; intriguing thoughts especially about the blind man that Jesus
cured in Mark:8; otherwise I see this novel ending up in second hand book store next month.

I liked the book. But as a long time thriller reader, it’s not as excellent as the ‘professional’ reviewers make it out to be. Ludlum, Clancy, Cussler… any one of them could have knocked this one out just as well as Blatty did. I reflect his reputation is better than this book.
What is really shocking is how some of the reviewers compared it to The Name of The Rose. Well, if you want to flavor a murder mystery with a small religion, OK, that’s comparable. But to imply that this book was as excellent as, or written as well as… that’s just not right. Not even close. So yes, this book is excellent, and yes you’ll delight in it, and yes it’s a page turner. But it’s not as excellent as the reviews. One man’s humble opinion.
PS: The Name of the Rose came out in 1983 in English, (1980 -Italian), so maybe you haven’t read it – It averages 4.5 stars over 290+ reviews, and then 4 stars over another 150 reviews as a movie.

Mr. Blatty has permanently been so gifted at adding dry wit into his works. We have a new and intelligent novel that mixes several types of genres into one. Extremely well paced and engrossing. I don’t want to give too much of its tale away, but hope we will be seeing this one done as a well made film too.
