Amazon.com Review
Penzler Pick, May 2000: Like many authors with ongoing characters, Robert Crais has taken a break from his legendary private eye. After eight novels featuring Elvis Cole and his loyal sidekick Joe Pike, Crais has made Carol Starkey, a bomb squad veteran now doing time as a Detective-2 with LAPD’s Criminal Conspiracy Section. Three years have passed since the detonation that killed Carol’s partner and lover, but she is still severely scarred both mentally and physically. She can’t bear to look in the mirror, and she hasn’t been with another man since David Boudreaux left her bed that last morning he went to work. She gets through the day with the help of Tagamet and alcohol.
When a bomb call takes the life of another colleague, Carol starts to investigate a series of explosions that seem to be designed to exterminate bomb technicians. She soon realizes that she’s “the one that got away.” With the help of an FBI agent whom she loathes well for interfering with her job but finds attractive anyway, Carol must track down one of the most frighteningly brilliant killers of the modern age.
This edgy thriller’s protagonist is one that the reader at first may have difficulty liking, but she’s got a background and history that make her truly three-dimensional. One hopes that Crais, one of the handful of young crime writers capable of writing consistently luminous prose, will continue to give us characters like Carol Starkey to star in his permanently powerful portraits of modern-day Los Angeles. –Otto Penzler

Demolition Angel has a excellent plot but the disgusting vocabulary detracts from the tale. The frequent use of profanity makes the tale unbelievable and gets in the way of the suspense at all turns. The leader has place together a excellent plot with the potential for much suspense, and if he had a better vocabulary the book could be riveting. This book could rate 4 or 5 stars if the leader knew the English language better and cleaned up the language.

upon completing this book. Unidimensional characters abound in this highly disappointing novel. Had I not read Crais’ work before – and loved it momentously – I would have dropped this book mid-read and written it off as an amateurish attempt at a thriller. But, I did perfect it and my advice is to save your $.

The heroine is sufficiently unique to grab you from the beginning. Character development takes a while, but once everyone is in place the interaction is very well done. I am looking foward to the movie that is scheduled to be made from this book.

Robert Crais has a knack for the light-hearted and the deep, all at once. The simple-going Cole is no lightweight, but enjoys a smile that he shares with others(whether they engage or not) and most likely at his own expense. There is nothing light-hearted about this character and Crais darkens every step with more unpleasantness. I managed to plow my way through this book but not because I liked any of the characters or was at all engaged or sympathetic; I kept hoping for some touch that would make me nod my head and say, “ah, that’s why, and it will be okay.” I didn’t root for anyone. At the end, I clogged the book and meandered over to find another one lacking a look back or a moment to digest. I don’t need another Elvis Cole; he just is so terrifically defined that this seems a bring shame on.

I establish this book to be very readable and filled with a lot of information about bomb squads that I establish fascinating. For some reason, the leader is equally fascinated with the heavy smoking habits of the heroine to the poinnt that it was distracting. Why?? Anyway, I’m glad I read it but it could have been a lot more entertaining by subtraction of disgusting habits.
