The civil war among the alien Atevi has finished. Tabini-aiji, powerful ruler of the Western Association, along with Cajeiri, his son and heir, has returned to the Bujavid, his seat of power. … and in what style. It’s easily one of the best books in the whole series which I consider one of the best in the genre. Talk about character development, we have Bren having to step up into his Lord role more than ever before and than having to suddenly revert to being paidhi on one of the most crucial missions of his career. Ilisidi is at her most meddling and in what style and scope. Geigi makes a comeback from his comfortable station post and is immediately thrown into the centre of an ancient quarrel that has finally, after all persons years spent shimmering went up in flames. And last but not least Cajeiri finally seems to have gotten his atevi legs under him but is trying very hard not to lose his ship experiences in the process. What a book. And the ending, talk about cliffhangers. The next one is a must buy. The only problem is that Cherryh takes roughly a year to write one so it’s a long wait, but I’m sure it will be well worth it.

First you must know – I like CJ Cherryh’s anthropological approach to SciFi.
I reflect the Foreigner series should be considered a classic. I have reread each
of the books more than twice (like 3 or 4 times, straight from Book 1).
For me, this is one of the best in this series. There isn’t the
amount of self-doubt by Bren, which was wearing a small thin. As a replacement for there was
a lot more action, perfectly written – and many statements that made me stop and
reflect about what the characters were adage, or even laugh.
I adored it and read it straight through. Only one complaint – now it is done and
although I will read it again in a few months, I have to wait for the completion of Bren’s
negotiation in the Marid.
Personally, I hope this series doesn’t end with a 12th book – it really can’t, can it?
I am looking forwards to seeing what happens when Cajeiri (who has become positively
fascinating!) becomes Aji…. and when the Kyo arrive…. and when Ilisidi dies….and when Bren must retire. There are too many tale lines I want to see concluded – and that is FAR from normal when a series has this many books in it. CJ Cherryh has done the impossible by keeping the excitment alive and the series strong for so long. Long may this continue!!

I very much loved this book. Bren has grown over the years of the series and is not so self-doubting. Cajieri is growing up and Ilsidi is growing ancient. It is but, a middle book. I look forwards to the next one. Also, I’m not sure if I admire her for putting off the Kyo for six books.

The atevi civil war is over; at least the overt hostilities that is. The Western Association ruler Tabini-aiji has won a shaky victory, but the prime enemy plotter still remains free; as Machigi chieftain of Taisigi clan has powerful followers in clandestine locations especially inside the capital.
While Tabini tightens his control, his human friend and loyal supporter Bren Cameron, who stayed in space for two years, returns planet side, but stays far away from the capital so the xenophobic enemy cannot use him as an alien immigrant. As a replacement for he remains on his estate in Najida where hiding in his basement is Baiji nephew of the Maschi clan chief. He hides from Machigi who was arranging a political marriage of convenience with fifteen year ancient Tiajo of his clan; once married Machigi was going to have Baiji killed so Tiajo’s relatives can run the strategic lands on the west coast. Although staying away from the capital, danger arrives in Najida when Tabini’s son Cajeri sneaks way from his secret service protectors to Bren’s estate; followed by his Fantastic-grandmother; and soon afterward assassins.
The exciting second tale in the fourth trilogy arc of the Foreigner Universe is a strong entry that fans will appreciate. The scheming conspiracies and alliances ongoing in Conspirator (should read first so as to avoid being lost in space) continue to thrive. The atevi-human relationships are fascinating to observe especially through Bren’s assessment; he realizes he is a PR nightmare for Tabini, but hiding in space and then on the Najida estate fail to abate the albatross he feels around his neck because he is too loyal a friend. Readers will delight in the return to the wonderful world of C.J. Cherryh as the overt war may be over, but the covert hostilities remain only the audience will mostly be away from the capital.

We sat down after dinner to catch up on what has happened in the last year, but as usual, they kept me up *waaayyy* past my bedtime until we finished telling tales about 3 o’clock. I was surprised and delighted to see Lord Geigi again. Cajeiri is growing up, as all kids must, but I am very impressed with his increasing thoughtfulness and intelligence, as well as his talent for mischief. Except for increasing physical shortcoming, Ilisidi has not changed a bit; she certainly held her own in a fight with Tabini. (I am still amazed that they so far forgot themselves as to quarrel so forcefully in our presence.) Bren’s estate was so peaceful and gorgeous and relaxing that the excitement and dread occasioned by the necissity of the sea rescue and then the home invasion attack was a rude surprise, (if to some extent expected nevertheless.) One hopes the attempted peace with our new clan allies is successful, even though the central government will have a fit – a matter I look forwards to hearing more about on our next visit. It was nice to see Toby and Barb again. Well, Toby anyway. If a name have to run afoul of ancient enemies, at least it was Barb. Language of ancient enemies, the Marid, their new leader seems reasonably intriguing, and his meeting with Bren was has me keen to hear more about this atevi leader. From Bren’s description of him, I reflect that even Tabini is going to have his hands full trying to finesse this fellow; though Cajeiri’s take on him would be fascinating. As for Banichi, Jago, Tano, and Algini — no reunion is perfect lacking their dependable protection and care. So very excellent to see everyone again and I am REALLY looking forwards to the next visit — I just hope it will be soon. I am not fond of cliffhangers.
