Denver Psychologist Kismet Knight counsels vampires. Her life changed forever when she learned a preternatural underworld, met Devereux, the powerful leader of a vampire coven, and was forced to rethink her notions of “reality.”
Still adjusting to her new role as an practiced on all things paranormal, she schedules what she believes is simply another radio interview. She couldn’t be more flawed. Not only does the radio host behave very strangely, but an ominous, on-air call from day-walking vampire Lyren Hallow turns Kismet’s world upside-down — again.
Before long thereafter, Maxie Westhaven, a tabloid newspaper reporter in search of a juicy tale, befriends Kismet, leading her into a bizarre world of role players, lost souls and death. Enter Victoria Essex, Devereux’s building manager and resident witch, who discloses a startling secret of her own.
Meanwhile, Luna, Devereux’s hostile femme fatal personal assistant, recognizes a perfect opportunity to throw a wrench into her boss’s blossoming relationship with the human psychologist, and, to complicate matters further, Kismet’s ancient boyfriend, self-absorbed Psychologist Tom Radcliffe, shows up with his own eccentric request.

I’ve read both Vamp Shrink books and I am impressed. Please tell me there will be more in this series! I reflect Lynda Hilburn is one talented writer and I could not wait to see what happened next between Kismet and Deveraux (what a hot 800 year ancient vampire he is an one heck of a fantastic guy). These books were a very pleasant surprise. I accidentally stumbled upon them and I am glad I did.

The best tales come from writers who include their own varied backgrounds and intensive research to make incredible combos of real with the fantastic. Familiarity with the “cognitive” counseling process will get a giggle from this clever use of talk therapy with sad immortals. Rumor has it that apt an immortal vampire is not a guarantee of golden happiness. Nor is it the end of sadly human emotions like jealously, competition and defeated unrealistic expectations. Add to the mix a devoted, passionate “top vamp” boyfriend, marvelous material possessions and tough secondary characters and you have a pleasing bit of escapism. The clever and original tales will assure this leader of auto-buy status. It’s a worthwhile investment just to see what happens next!.

Vampires, steamy sex, and fascinating characters are hallmarks of Lynda Hilburn’s writing. Imagine psychologist Kismet Knight who has recently learned that vampires exist and that one believes her to be his soul mate. That’s a decent recipe for success. But Lynda doesn’t stop there. She sprinkles in some humor, then adds the spectacular twist of a very powerful, very ancient vampire controlling and imparting some of his powers to Kismet–because he can and because he has a vendetta against her vampire lover. That’s what you have in Lynda Hilburn’s latest novel, Dark Harvest.
If you plot to read it, I fervently recommend reading her earlier novel, The Vampire Shrink, first to get to know the characters and the fascinating vampire world she has made.
Another thing I appreciate about Hilburn’s writing in Dark Harvest is her skill in using the first-person point of view for her main character. As a writer myself, I’ve seen additional writers (especially novices) tackle first-person with a notable lack of success. It’s one of the toughest points of view to do well and possibly the simplest to screw up if you don’t know what you’re doing. Too regularly, it can come across as the character talking to the reader in a diary-like fashion.
Hilburn, on the contrary, puts the reader firmly into Kismet Knight’s head, so much so that the reader at times wants to strangle Kismet for her stupidity in not listening to the warnings of persons wiser than she is, placing herself into a world of distress as a result. This is how Hilburn makes wonderful conflict for the character and lets the reader experience it all.
But where Hilburn really shines is in portraying a Kismet mentally controlled by–and bent to the will of–the very ancient vampire. Her skillful use of the first person is strongest here. Putting the reader inside a sane mind is one thing; putting the reader inside a mind being manipulated and controlled by another is incredibly hard to accomplish–yet Hilburn pulls it off. Pick up the book and delight in the thrill ride of Dark Harvest.
