Watch the Skies is about an alien known only as #5 going around, building a video of people dancing to ancient 70s disco composition, and then killing them for entertainment for additional aliens around the galaxy. This doesnt sit well with Daniel so he goes off on a mission to end it.
This book was dreadful, but using that word would imply that this is really readable. Like the first book, it starts off pretty excellent but nearly straight away becomes worse and worse with each new page before apt a peice of dreck. The show how stupid it is, ill clarify one of the scenes from the beginning of the book. Basically, daniels dad, manages to turn a clunker van into a quote un-quote “cross between the mystery machine and a NASA mandate center”. How?! 1. He did this in next to no time and 2. He was busy eating dinner with everyone else, so who the hell built it? And were did they get the equipment to do so and again, how did they erect it so quick? That scene alone is a microcosm for how idotic the rest of the book becomes and there is no need to clarify all of it (or the time) as this alone does the trick. In fact, this book is supposed to be about him killing aliens, and yet we spend half of the book with him dealing with predictable teenage issues like school and romance, but why does he need to go to school? We even spend an entire chapter of just his “mom” arguing with school people over the phone. These scenes are pointless and add absolutely nothing to the plot or all-purpose tale.
The character Daniel himself is still not likeable, mostly because of one simle trait: hes flawless. For persons that dont know, he has the ability to make anything he wants at will. Because he can factually have anything and everthing imagineable at his disposal, it proves that he has no weakness, and yet for some reason the book continues to clarify how the aliens are deadly and what not, but they really arent when they basically solve all of their problems by 1-shotting everything. But wait, if daniel can make their guns too, why not just use them against them, or make some kind of armor that protects him against anything they can do? Afterall, he can do anything. Another thing thats rediculous is that he has many assorted alien powers at his disposal now that he never had in the first book. Were did he get these? How did he learn them? Why did he never use these in the first book? Is any of this ever clarified? No. Just to name a couple to show how stupid they are, he has a blantant rip-off of the Jedi Mind trick, only he has to be touching a name for it to work, and he wireless broadband internet access in his head. You cannot make this up people, persons powers (and more) show even more how he isnt a likable character because he has no flaws.
In conclusion, do not read this book. It was bascially the first book re-written only possibly worse somehow. The plot was dull, you cant care about the characters, and the constant building up of abilities and additional random things made it near impossible to read. Even a teen or pre-teen would probably find this dull, which is sad considering that this is the target range, but when Patterson markets it to be readable by anyone, I expect it to be. Sorry to say, it isnt readable at all. Avoid this book at all costs.

This is a kids book. Until now, I’ve loved Patterson’s books, but in the future will look carefully before investing my money in something so incredibly juvenile that it even reads like a child wrote it. Couldn’t make myself end it.

Based on reviews here, I bought this book for the son of a friend. He loved his birthday gift and was last reported to be reading the first of the Daniel X books. (He likes Watch the Skies best.) His Dad was reasonably pleased that his son was showing an independent interest in reading. It is permanently rewarding to by a child a book they like to read!

Daniel X is getting stronger, but so are the villains on his list. My only complaint was the 251 pages I quickly read thru. 8 hours of excitement and now I’m left to wait for demons and druids, maybe Daniel can imagine a larger book next time.
