To find her destiny, she must trust him with her life…and her heart.
Southern Arcana, Book 1
Jackson Holt makes a decent living as a private investigator in New Orleans, home of one of the largest underground supernatural populations in the United States. He and his partners have never met a case they couldn’t crack…until a local bar owner questions him to do a small digging on her newest hire.
New Orleans is the fourth destination in as many months for Mackenzie Brooks, a woman on the run from a deranged stalker. After all, any man who shows up on her doorstep claiming to be her destined lover has more than a few screws loose. But crazy doesn’t clarify why he permanently finds her no matter how far she runs.
When her well-meaning boss puts a PI on her case, Mackenzie comes face to face with the incredible truth: magic is real, and whatever spell has kept her hidden and separate from the paranormal world is rapidly deteriorating.
With time running out, she has no choice but to trust Jackson as he struggles to uncover the truth of her past—and her destiny.
Warning: This book contains devious schemes, epic battles, forbidden like between a shapeshifter and a spellcaster, nosy secondary characters, furniture-endangering sex and a woman fighting to choose her own destiny.

Mackenzie is on the run from something even she does not know the perfect tale on. She’s been running for some time and is not only physically exhausted but mentally and financially as well. When she stops in New Orleans she meets Jackson and the rest of the characters. With spellcasters, werewolves and additional shifters and more paranormal folk about you’d expect this to be a rousing excellent action read – which it is, at the beginning with some fantastic tension, but the momentum stops about part way through and then it kind of fizzles in places or becomes hard to accept–alternative up towards the end.
The things that were fantastic were more the urban fantasy part – excellent action and descriptions with some nice dialogue between characters (which there are reasonably a few of). Where this shines is when they get Nick’s sister involved with their Dad. Persons are some tense moments and really spotlight some excellent writing.
A couple of things lessened my enjoyment of Crux: Southern Arcana, Book 1 but chief among them is that the relationship between Jackson and Mackenzie feels not reasonably perfect – at times I really felt like they were nearly just friends or it was just hot you-know-what. The ending helped out a bit as it showed them effective together so they seemed more like a couple and I really had a better sense that they “fit” and were a excellent partnership – but that was pretty late in the game for me.
It was nearly as if the book could not choose if it wanted to be romance or urban fantasy- although the urban fantasy was, for me, the might. I really preferred some of the additional characters better than the main couple (I liked particularly well Alec as well as Nick’s sister–persons are the tales I really want to read!). Also Jackson just did not scream “hero” to me. I mean he was determined but he felt kind of, I don’t know, less. I reflect having him set amongst a lot of alpha type werewolves and shifters gave the impression he was sort of a weak link.
My additional main issue was with Marcus and his part of the tale line. The choice he makes is a small too quick–and did not make sense. When you add this to the fact everyone can just pick up and go all over the place that suspension of belief problem takes center stage.
Still I did delight in it and I will pick up the second one to see where it is going. Hence I rounded up to 4 stars although really this is a 3.5 or so star rating for me.

So you know where I’m coming from, I’m not really a fan of romance novels, but I like Moira Rogers, so read her books.
This book wasn’t terrible. The characters were appealing – you’ll adrore Jackson, Mackenzie, Alec and Nikki. While heavy on the romance, this book also has an appealing plot (I won’t go into it b/c additional reviewers have). I establish, but, that at times the action was a bit hard to follow. There’s a lot going on in the world the authors made, which may be the issue for me. I establish the ending to be to some extent contrived.
Compared the the Red Rock Pass books, I don’t reflect this was as excellent, but defnitely worth a read. The next book, which all ears on Nikki, was better (though the world the characters inhabit became even more complex & at times unbelievable), and although it’s not out yet, I have high hopes for the Alec book.

Crux is the first book in the Southern Arcana series. The book starts off with Mackenzie Brooks in Memphis (my hometown, woot!), on the run. She’s being chased down by Marcus. No matter how carefully she hides, he manages to track her down. She leaves Memphis and heads to New Orleans, hoping that Marcus doesn’t track her down.
I’ve heard about this series through Twitter but it wasn’t really on my radar as a must read. That all changed when I received an email from All Romance Ebooks stating that Moira Rogers had sent me copy of Crux for download. What??? I was surprised and excited. So I downloaded Crux and immediately ongoing reading. And I was hooked. I loved that Mac was a woman who’s life was in turmoil and she handled it lacking being whiny. I despise whiny women. It annoys the poop outta me. And then there’s Jackson Holt, the P.I. who has magic powers. I loved this character; he made me swoon. He was understanding, protective and sexy as all get out. One of my favorite lines from the book is when Mac says to Jackson: You are unfairly sexy, Jackson Holt. Swoon!
I downloaded my copy on my laptop and was only able to read while I was at home. If I’d had it on my Kindle, I know I would have finished reading it in a couple of days as a replacement for of nearly a week. Crux kept me reading and wanting more. There were some parts that dragged a small for me. The whole preparation the attack and rescue could have been shortened, in my opinion. I was ready for some more action or heat or both. But it didn’t deter from how much I loved this book. Once I finished reading Crux, I immediately bought Crossroads. This time, it’s on my Kindle so I can read it whenever and wherever I want.

I don’t primarily read romance. I like paranormal and science fiction as well. This is a wonderful blend of erotic romance and paranormal both!

I received this book as a review copy and ongoing it in a hasten as I noticed the relief date is next week. SO I place my newly loved In Death series down and ongoing reading. So, you can see this book had no excellent starting point cuz I had to cheat on Roarke for it. But I can truthfully say: I so don’t regret it. I really loved reading this book.
It’s a fantastic developed urban fantasy with a fantastic variety of supernatural beings. We have my beloved shifters: not only the werewolves but all kind of them. They all have unique talents and attributes. On the additional hand we have casters: kind of witches and warlocks. With this mysterious mumbling of spells and weird things place together for a potion. And don’t worry nothing like Harry Potter. LOL We also me psychics like empaths and telekinetics. It’s a fantastic variety of supernaturals but one thing they have in common: their society-rules suck even more than ours. It’s full of prejudices and archaic notions. Fantastic potential for the terrible guys!
This book is about Mackenzie, an ordinary girl with a fantastic problem. A name chases her from one city to the next and she has no thought why this lunatic finds her again every time. She finds help in New Orleans and meets the wonderful Jackson there. She’s frightened half to death but she would never give up. She doesn’t want to get anyone else in harms way and is awe-inspiring courageous for such a young girl. She’s straight away attracted to Jackson but would never risk to bring him distress so she wants to stay alone.
Jackson is a caster and one fantastic man. He’s a small Casanova and known for attracting the eye of the fairer *snort* sex. He works as a private investigator and knows all these small tricks- ordinary and supernatural- to get the information he needs lacking attracting attention. He’s not a super strong shifter but he knows how to defend himself and the ones he cares about.
These two have some serious chemistry going on. They want each additional but they know all the reason why they shouldn’t get down and dirty. The erect up between them can cause you real sexual frustration but I loved every minute of it. I thought the first time they finally get going was a bit rushed, I don’t mean the act itself- not at all- but the way it came to it. Yeah, I know, that’s really vague said but it’s all I’m gonna say.
The plot is action packed and has a few nice and unexpected twists in it.
I like that we learn all about the world on the way together with our heroine. This way it permanently feels more real to me.
The tension builds up to a certain point and the outcome was a bit too smooth for me but it didn’t ruin my reading pleasure at all.
Crux is a fantastic start for a new urban fantasy series with the right amount of flavor. Loved every page and couldn’t wait to start Crossroads, book 2 in this series.
The paperback of Crux releases next week on the January, 5th. The ebook is already available(for the ones who just can’t wait).
