Product Description
With the same suppleness, energy, and range of voices that won their translation of The Brothers Karamazov the PEN/Book-of-the-Month Club Prize, Pevear and Volokhonsky offer a brilliant translation of Dostoevsky’s classic novel that presents a clear insight into this astounding psychological thriller. “The best (translation) currently available”–Washington Post Book World.Amazon.com Review
The talented Alex Jennings makes an atmosphere of gripping psychological tension and brings a variety of characters to life in this new audio edition of a crime classic. When the student Raskolnikov puts his philosophical theory to the essential test of murder, a tragic tale of suffering and redemption unfolds in the dismal setting of the slums of czarist, prerevolutionary St. Petersburg. While Jennings’s adept repertoire of British accents works to demonstrate the varying classes of characters, it occasionally distracts the listener from the Russian setting. But, Dostoyevsky’s rendering of 18th-century Russia emerges unscathed, bringing the dark pathos (such as wretched poverty and rampant suffering) to life. (Running time: 315 minutes; 4 cassettes)

This book is despicable and could only be called a classic becuase it is ancient. The novel save the first 100 pages is dire and it is simple to see how the book will end I am 14 and read the book in 2 weeks understanding every word and knowing what was going to take place. The book centers around a ex-student named Raskolnikov( the only decnt character) who kills a ancient women and her sister and robbs them due to hard financial times adter this act is over the book spirals down and crashes as we are introduced to dull 1 dimensional characters and a dull plot and I use plot only because there are no additional words. A paperwieght more than a book that I would only recommend to people who1 Have nothing better to do or 2 Who want to impress thier friends. I am sorry about the poor spelling and grammer in this review but i find it hard to talk about a book that I detest unless adage that I do detset it. Thank you for reading this review but don’t read the book by some decent toilet paper!

This book was very well written, yet unbelievably dull. I didn’t want to end it because I was so bored. What is so fantastic about this book? Right, there were certain parts that were very real and appealing. Yet the book drags on and on while not keeping the reader interested. I would not recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a page-turner.

I HAD TO FORCE MYSELF TO KEEP READING THIS NOVEL. I ASSUMED THAT A NOVEL THAT HAD GOTTEN TO THE STATUS OF “CLASSIC” WOULD BE A TERRIFIC NOVEL. THIS IS NOT THE CASE. EVERY EXCITING PAGE IN THE BOOK WAS FOLLOWED BY 50 PAGES OF TEDIOUS NOTHING. I AM AN AVID READER AND USUALLY FINISH A NOVEL IN A COUPLE OF DAYS. THIS TOOK ME TWO WEEKS TO FINISH. I COULDN’T WAIT FOR IT TO END.UNLESS YOU HAVE TO READ THIS FOR A CLASS DON’T WASTE YOUR TIME.

after reading multiple reviews of Crime and Punishment written by readers who adore both the tale and its leader to the point of asylum-worthy obsessions, i figured i’d check it out.
first of all, the names are so similar that it is extremely tedious and hard for the reader to have to fumble baaaack and fooorth.. page to page.. to recall which character is the doctor and which one is the detective.
second of all, the entire book is a coincidence conspiracy. out of nowhere, relations were made, characters reappeared, etc. for example, when raskolnikov is walking around and sees m. [whatever the hell is name was.. proving my first point] get run over by a horse. HMMM. just by chance?
third of all, this book is really appealing, but takes forever to read. hey, if you’re a name who has no sex life and nothing better to do.. then go for it. otherwise just watch CSI.
it is a crime to mislead people with raving reviews! it is punishment for the misled to read such a novel.
