Product Description
From the moment he set foot on it, Karl Rove has rocked America’s political stage. He ran the national College Republicans at twenty-two, and turned a Texas dominated by Democrats into a bastion for Republicans. He launched George W. Bush to national renown by unseating a well loved Democratic administrator, and then orchestrated a GOP White House win at a time when voters had small reason to throw out the incumbent party. For engineering victory after unlikely victory, Rove became known as “the Architect.”
Because of his success, Rove has been attacked his entire career, accused of everything from battle chicanery to ideological divisiveness. In this frank memoir, Rove responds to critics, passionately articulates his political philosophy, and defends the choices he made on the battle trail and in the White House. In the course of putting the record straight, Rove takes on Democratic leaders like Harry Reid and Tom Daschle who acted cynically or deviously behind clogged doors, and even Republicans who lacked backbone at crucial moments.
Among additional controversial topics Rove addresses, he sets the record straight on:
- The facts of his mother’s suicide and reports of his father’s alleged homosexuality
- The accusation that he bugged his own office in Texas
- The real tale of how George W. Bush defeated administrator Ann Richards
- The details of Bush’s stealth battle to win the White House in 2000
- Why Bush cratered in New Hampshire but prevailed in South Carolina in 2000
- How Bush chose Dick Cheney as his presidential running mate
- How the Bush battle managed Bush’s DUI
- The defection of Vermont Senator Jim Jeffords
- The frustrating challenges of Hurricane Katrina
- The facts behind Rove’s painful three years fending off a federal indictment, and
- Why Obama is incorrect on healthcare.
Courage and Consequence is also the first intimate account from the highest level at the White House of one of the most headline-building presidencies of the modern age. Rove takes readers behind the scenes of
- The bitterly contested 2000 presidential contest
- Every tense minute aboard Air Force One on 9/11
- The choice to go to war in Afghanistan and Iraq, and
- The hard-won 2004 reelection fight.
Rove is candid about his mistakes in the West Wing and in his campaigns, and talks frankly about the heartbreak of his early family tree years. He spells out what it takes to win elections and how to govern successfully once a candidate has won. But Courage and Consequence is ultimately about the joy of a life committed to the conservative cause, a life spent in political combat and service to country, no matter the costs.

So far, this book reads like every additional bio: Rove simply waxing poetically about himself…a lot! (608 pages). But regardless of his past, and I’m sure he was a lovely child, teen, young adult–here is what we all know about the man since he’s become a public figure: Karl Rove has done more hurt to this country than any Hollywood screenwriter could dream up. He has done nothing in the way of excellent service to this nation–service that would warrant him being admired in any way whatsoever. History will write a very dark chapter about him and he will be remembered more for his attempts to undermine the Constitution than for anything else. His shameless lying about his involvement in the Valerie Plame affair will also mark his lonely gravestone–and his continual denial about it won’t help his future grandchildren defend him–though they may try. The most troubling character-trait that this man possesses is his obstinance toward everything that opposes his beliefs–even when it’s glaringly right. He is never incorrect and plods straight yet to be despite the wreckage that he continues to place behind for future generations to clean up. He has completely attempted to act as if he is simply smarter than the rest of us, and any time he lies, he tries to play the, “Oh you folks just aren’t smart enough to know the intricacies of this complex situation” card.
But you are not smart, Mr. Rove. You are simply more audacious than most of us are willing to be when it comes to lying, cheating, and stealing (elections). Most of us with a conscience worry about the fait of our souls. This book is like everything else you’ve ever done–calculatedly deceitful, grossly arrogant, and supremely naïve (Americans know you’re still trying to dupe them). Do the country a favor once and for all and stop poisoning the public discourse of America. You have lied for so long that it has become a reflex that can’t be cured. You’re like a Mafioso who has performed so many illegal acts that he knows he can never right his life … you know … turn things around–so he accepts his fait and tries to justify his being. He finds support in being in a perpetual state of denial. He thinks the answer is more, more, more, but it’s really less, less, less. We need less of you.
But the die has been cast, Mr. Rove, and now you, the Mafioso, must live the rest of your life with the realization and bring shame on that must haunt you. When you are alone with your own thoughts, in the recesses of your mind the sickness of your deeds and ways must plague you. What a lonely man you must be. I’ve read several chapters so far and I had to stop to write this review. Why? Because I thought to myself: How do I know if you are telling me the truth about the life you are describing–your life? Your book reminds me of your many newspaper articles. It reminds me of how men like you have become members of this new brand of media that effectively sells lies. So calculated! Roves disgusting Fox News and Wall Street Journal media act, along with many additional talking heads’, is brilliantly captured and etched in stone for future generations to study in the book 71 Days: The Media Assault On Obama. Professors across the country, including some at NYU, are using that text in their Media Ethics/Propaganda courses to teach their students the truth. Thanks to that history book and others like it, you will be forever infamous, Mr. Rove.

A narrow minded, biased perspective !!! Being Karl Rove, one should expect that…there seems to be a distrust of the entire liberal side of the platform….he talks about courage, but this courage is based on one’s faith…which in itself is highly questionable…Bush too had a lot of courage, based on his faith, and we all saw what that courage did for this country ! Courage is acting on what is right, and one discerns what is right by listening to ALL sides, and acting on what is the most right action to take, and based on informed, educated and intelligent choice-building…
The disconnect between the right and left wing here, especially in the halls of the government, the White House, is appalling…and is abundantly at spectacle here in the book…

This book, along with Sara Failins book are next to my toilet, just in case I run out of TP. Horrible writing and just a huge stout lie

Karl Rove’s new book, Courage and Consequence, is, to say the least, an insipid rehash of the Bush years. Rove spins this latest redaction in an airy, chatty, personal style. It is a memoir worthy of the childish ramblings of a junior high confessional. What does come across in poignant fashion is Rove’s own shallowness. If you’re looking for factual information or right critical insight on the Bush years then save your money.

Rove promoted the invasion of a defenseless country. Rove lives in lala land, unable to comprehend the consequences of that invasion, which has ruined hundreds of thousands of familes. Yet, we are supposed to feel sorry for him because his mother committed suicide because his father wasn’t gay? huh?
This book is a feeble attempt to rewrite history. If the war in Iraq was really about terrible intelligence, then why was George Tenet, the head of the CIA agreed the Presidential Medal of Freedom well after it was proven there were no WMD in Iraq?
