Who is this guy and why are people listening?
Forget Rush Limbaugh, Bill O’Reilly, and Sean Hannity—Glenn Beck is the Right’s new media darling and the unofficial leader of the conservative grassroots. Lampooned by the Left and Lionized by the far Right, his bluster-and-tears brand of political commentary has commandeered attention on both sides of the aisle.
Glenn Beck has emerged over the last decade as a unique and bizarre conservative icon for the new century. He encourages his listeners to embrace a cynical paranoia that slides easily into a fantasyland filled with enemies that do not exist and solutions that are incoherent, at best. Since the election of President Barack Obama, Beck’s bombastic, conspiratorial, and regularly viciously personal approach to political combat has made him one of the most controversial facts in the history of American broadcasting.
In Common Nonsense, investigative reporter Alexander Zaitchik explores Beck’s weird brew of ratings lust, infinite ego, conspiratorial hard-right politics, and gimmicky morning-radio entertainment chops.
- Separates the facts from the fiction, following Beck from his troubled childhood to his recent rise to the top of the conservative media heap
- Zaitchik’s recent three-part series in Salon caused so much buzz, Beck felt the need to attack it on his show
- Based on Zaitchik’s interviews with ex- Beck coworkers and review of countless Beck writings and television and radio shows
- Clarifies why Beck is permanently crying, why he has so many conservative enemies, why he’s driven by conspiracy theories, and why he’s treacherous to the health of the republic
- A contributing writer to Alternet, Zaitchik’s reporting has appeared in the New Republic, the Nation, Salon, Wired, Reason, and the Believer
Beck, a perverse and high-impact media spectacle, has emerged as a leader in a conservative protest movement that raises troubling questions about the future of American politics.

I’ll tell you right up front I didn’t read it which I have small doubt most of the reviewers here have never honestly read Glenn’s opposing viewpoint or watched his TV show, I rarely listen to Beck’s radio program but I do catch the TV program via a VCR honestly regularly.
I have an thought why don’t you offer to appear on his show and debate him on the facts of what he has been talking about concerning the history of progressivism in America and the consequences I’d be surprised if he’d turn down an opportunity like that, the Obama administration has had a direct line to his red phone to right any mistakes in his reporting but the phone is never rang that sound is deafening. The sad fact for Beck critics is that he is riding the wave of a new paradigm as opposed to the ancient paradigm Rush Limbaugh, in case you’ve missed it a large segment of the American people who are waking up rediscovering their constitution, history and heritage i.e. we’re doing our own research in learning the truth for ourselves as opposed to the challenger who have been spoonfed Marxist ideology disguised as liberalism more accurately progressivism and swallowed it hook line and sinker.
IMO these fundamentals of society HATE Glenn Beck with a passion because he’s telling the truth about things you wish the American people to stay ignorant about. Many of the personal attacks against Beck highlight his younger years when he himself has been upfront about his alcoholism and journey to the bottom of the barrel that’s called a testimony by the way and anyone who has walked that journey knows that it gives you a unique and life-changing perspective, anyone who has watched or listened to him would know he’s not hiding it therefore attacking him on that speaks more about you than him.
Finally many things that Glenn warned about that were coming a year or so ago have been proven to be right, it’s more than political partisanship that drives his critics but I reflect it’s amusing that the people who described themselves to be the champions of free speech and tolerance seek to censor and ruin him, what’s lost here is truth. I grew up in the 50s and 60s in a Democrat union household and I was a member of that party for many years but that party no longer exists and has been subverted by anti-American extremists and the Republicans? Well they’re pretty much worthless. Hard times are coming and it won’t be people like Glenn Beck who lead us there.
If you’re not worried of truth check out Library of Congress 1963 Communist goals compared to America of 1963 and now it’s utterly alarming they’ve gotten much of what they wanted and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Any person here that considers himself a patriotic American and goes along with this needs to reevaluate his worldview and allegiances or redefine their definition of jingoism. Now you are telling me Glenn Beck is lying?

“The American people will never knowingly adopt Socialism. But under
the name of ‘liberalism’ they will adopt every fragment of the Socialist
program, until one day America will be a Socialist nation, lacking
knowing how it happened.” Norman Thomas (1884-1968) six-time U.S. Presidential candidate for the Socialist Party of America, 1948 – from an interview during the presidential battle,

This book purports to be an examination of the phenomenon that is Glenn Beck. It starts with the unquestioned premise that Glenn Beck is, self-evidently, (1) corrupt, (2) immoral, (3) ignorant, and (4) incorrect.
It then moves through most of the principal fallacies in proper logic in supporting, or “proving”, that which it presumes via “examinations” of central episodes in Beck’s life. Character assassination, red herrings, straw men, you name it, they’re all here in plentiful supply. In fact, they’re all that’s here.
In the end, all it boils down to is the following:
Beck is incorrect because he is incorrect.
Beck is a liar because he is a liar.
Beck is corrupt because he is corrupt.
Beck is immoral because he is immoral.
This makes for a highly convincing, enormously satisfying read for everyone who agrees with the aforementioned premise. In addition to being a masterstroke of tautology, it is successful as a screed, a veritable festival of tantrum, a juicy slice of propaganda.
But it makes for a worthless bit of tripe as concerning an honest, objective examination of the man and his message. This is precisely as you might expect, agreed the threat that message poses to the millions whose very livelihoods depend upon the status quo. The status quo in which 300 million Americans are pitted against each additional as the massive apparatus of the state is constructed and extended, and in which the foundations of country are gutted and/or abandoned.
But maybe you’re into this sort of thing.

This is nothing more than a smear attempt, on Mr. Beck, the Tea Party movement and anyone who believes in the Constitution. Only the far, far left will like this book, any honest minded person will see though it. Don’t wast your money, just watch MSNBC.

What better way to make a few bucks by personally attacking one of America’s prominent conservative voices of America. Liberalism is a mental disorder.

..Incoherant babble..I have not read this book but was delightfully entertained on C-Spans “book tv” so I did hear a 15 minute reading by the leader and a question and answer session…If this is what progressive authors and book readers are consumed with as this administrations number are plummeting..then I am relieved that republic is indeed safe! Glenn Beck has the Progressives frightened? now that’s amusing.
