Learn the tantalizing right tales behind your favorite colors.
For example: Cleopatra used saffron—a source of the color yellow—for seduction. Extracted from an Afghan mine, the blue “ultramarine” paint used by Michelangelo was so expensive he couldn’t afford to buy it himself. Since very ancient times, carmine red—still establish in lipsticks and Cherry Coke today—has come from the blood of insects.

Sometimes it’s hard to stop the research, hard not to tell just one more amusing tale, very hard not to add just one more fact. This is what keeps Finlay’s book from being a total success. As a replacement for of exhaustive, it’s exhausting. The result is that the reader–this one, at least–starts skimming and then loses interest. To me, the book’s too self-indulgent by far, so detailed it’s a bore.

I have not yet read or bought this book, but I have to make a tiny comment about the editorial published on this page. Ms. Finlay was certainly not the first woman to visit the Lapis Lazuli mines in Afghanistan. They are the most legendary mines of Lapis in the world, and have been studied by many women, in fact. Dr. Georgina Herrmann visited the mines with the Oxford University Expedition to Afghanistan in 1964. While there her team inspected the mines, collaborated with the Afghan Ministry of Mines and Industries, and were allowed to take samples back to Oxford. Dr. Herrmann wrote her PHD dissertation about the sources and use of lapis lazuli and subsequently published several artilcles on her findings. I judge that Dr. Michele Casanova (another woman) may have also visited the mines more recently while effective up her PHD dissertation in France.

The book came in perfect condition and was delivered in a timely fashion. The book itself is reasonably appealing, informative, simple to know and to some extent comical. I’d recommend both the book and the service.
