This book is fantastic, when used along with the internet, for getting information about thousands of colleges. Of course you still need to go visit them, personally. But this is a excellent way to weed out, and even learn, colleges all over the US!

“2011 College Handbook” (2222 pages) is one massive book. They should sell it by the pound! The premise of the book is reasonably simple: provide a fleeting overview of the 2000+ 4 year colleges and the 1700+ 2 year colleges that grace pour country. At that it succeeds, mostly. Most informative is the “freshman class profile” which includes (for most colleges) the key information of how many applicants, how many were admitted, and how many really enrolled. It also includes the all-vital tuition and room + board fees, but beware, persons numbers are generally 1 or 2 years ancient, and so if you are looking at starting college in, say, Fall of 2011, these numbers are already outdated.
Because of the (factually) enormous size of this book, this is not particulary user-friendly. It’s just HUGE. But it’s a excellent starting point, up to a degree, simply to get a lay of the land of colleges. If your son or daughter simply wants to know what colleges are out there in his or her state (since most kids attend college in their home staet), this is not a terrible place to start. My daughter spent some, but not a lot, of time with this book (a few years ago), and quickly stirred on to additional books when she had a clearer thought of what colleges she was most interested in. In particular the Princeton Review’s “best 373 colleges” book, the 2011 edition of which is coming out in early August.
