In the heartwarming sequel to Chosen by a Horse, Susan Richards tells of the continuing gifts brought to her life by her beloved horse, Lay Me Down.
Readers cried with Susan Richards when, at the end of Chosen by a Horse, her beloved mare was laid to rest in the paddock where she had met her herd — Hot Shot, Tempo, and Georgia. Now they will cheer as Susan recounts the further wonders that came into her life as part of Lay Me Down’s legacy: a bestselling book, a tour to support that book, the reconnection to friends and family tree who come to celebrate her success, and like– unexpected, intricate, and right.
And so Chosen Forever works its magic as a sequel of self-discovery, as Susan continues to grow into her new life. Told in charming prose with her familiar and disarming sense of humor, and featuring a new supporting cast of animal characters (a Siamese cat, two pugs, tow Labs, and appearances by horses), this is another moving tale for readers facing their own challenges at recreating their lives. Chosen Forever is the tale of what happens the day after all of your dreams come right– how you learn to accept that you deserve to be pleased, and how persons we like continue to offer us gifts long after they are gone.

Ugh. I barely made it through this book. It was not very appealing. There were nice flashes of entertaining tale-telling, but for the most part, this book was just a day by tedious day recounting of her book tour. Who was there, who the owner of the store was, how many people showed up (and how she felt about this) and where she ate afterward.
I reflect the success of “Chosen by a Horse” just made the leader more narcissistic than before, and mostly we get ‘treated’ to more recounting of who in her family tree did her incorrect in her life. At a certain point, one must just choose to go on and not dwell on the pain. If that’s not possible, perhaps journal-ling or talk therapy would be helpful.
The part of the Chosen Forever that kept me going was reading about Dennis Stock. He sounds like such a fantastic guy that I wanted to hear more about him. I just wish the editors of the book could have coaxed a re-write that more all ears not on a book tour or ancient memories of past trauma, but on the relationships that she forms as a result of her experience with “Lay Me Down,” the racehorse she rescued and who she grew to like so much. It seemed that a whole village had sprung up to support the leader during that time, and I wondered what happened to them all.
As a horse lover, I was really shocked at learning of the circumstances of her beloved Morgan mare Georgia’s death. She died of founder. Once a horse is foundered, she should not be allowed to eat grass, yet Georgia was pastured her entire life, it seems. What’s more, she had foundered before and recovered several times, so she should never have been pastured and allowed to eat grass again. Mistakes like these made me doubt the expertise of her vet and her friend Allie, who was made out in “Chosen by a Horse” to be a horse-whisperer type. But again, maybe we don’t have the whole tale here. Nevertheless, it was a fantastic disappointment. My mom loved “Chosen by a Horse,” and had had a similar experience to the leader, dealing with a sick horse. I had hoped my mom would delight in reading a continuation of Chosen by Horse. It’s a bring shame on.

Really wanting to like the book and not having read Chosen by a Horse, I establish it tedious, repetitious and with just enough insightful inspired – and at rare times, humorous – flashes about scenery and animals to keep going or skimming to the end. The pleased romantic resolution and motivation to write is worth about 10 Oprah Shows. If there are any future printings, a strong edit that would cut out about half the book would help the book enormously. I look forwards to reading Chosen by a Horse.

Maybe it’s my fault for thinking this book would be a continuation of the Chosen by a Horse tale. When I bought the book, I was looking forwards to catching up what had become friends to me: Hotshot, Tempo, Georgia, Allie, and Dr. Grice.
Well, all the horses are dead, Allie and the leader barely speak, and Dr. Grice has stirred on.
So what is this book about? Book tours. A tedious account of each book tour the leader goes on to promote her first published book. We get a weather report for each day of every reading, an audience count, and whether the leader went directly to her hotel or out to dinner afterwards. If I had a fork, I would have stuck myself in the head with it, but I kept thinking: Maybe it gets better. It doesn’t.
The first book, Chosen by a Horse, was poetic and filled with like. This book, Chosen Forever, is filled with whining about a hard childhood and has none of the magic of the first book.

I bought this book because I like to read just about anything about horses. Especially how they help humans heal emotionally. This book is just drivel, the leader just wanted to write another book. She gets personal, but then pulls back and never lets us know why she really got married. Why write a book, if you are going to whine throughout about how miserable you were as a child and adult, and then start to delve into the issues of an adult relationship, but cut it fleeting, as if getting married was the ‘pleased ever after’, and never share how you made an older generational relationship work, including the physical, mental, aged bodies, and even whose house did you choose to live in?? I reflect this leader is a ‘lightweight’.

Having read Chosen by a Horse, I was excited and nervous to read Chosen Forever. I establish it to be just as readable but not reasonably as compelling.
I judge in Richards’s mind, she is living her own life as a tribute to Lay Me Down. It was very hard for her to go on a book tour, but she wanted to honor the courage that LMD had shown in the face of terrible circumstances. It is to some extent tedious to hear the continual recitation of Richards’s sad life, but it is meant to be uplifting that she is dealing with her issues and pushing herself to get out there and live. Personally, I find Dennis Stock’s courtship a small creepy, maybe because Richards is naturally rather suspicious of additional people and their motives so she makes him seem kind of stalker-y. I really want them to be pleased together, but I am not convinced. Anyway, I recommend the book, not as highly as CBAH, but I like Richards’s writing and hope she has more to say.
