The unforgettable tale of the 1973 U.S. Open-and the unknown young golfer who astonished the world…
In 1973, a Who’s Who of golf’s greats gathered at the Oakmont Country Club for the U.S. Open. Among persons privileged to win were Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer. As a replacement for, Johnny Miller-a 26-year-ancient oneĀtime phenom from San Francisco-astonished the golfing world by edging out the legends and crafting a record-setting 63 to win by a single stroke.
Featuring wide archival and video research and candid interviews with leading golfers of the era, Chasing Greatness perfectly captures one of the unlikeliest victories and dramatic sports triumphs of the past half century. Authors Adam Lazarus and Steve Schlossman also chronicle the careers and the lives of six extraordinary facts during golf’s modern-day golden era: Miller, Palmer, Nicklaus, Lee Trevino, Tom Weiskopf, and John Schlee.

Perfect fathers day book and incredible read in all-purpose. I’m not a huge golf fan but I’m a sports fan and a lover of competitive drama, and I can’t reflect of anyone who this book wouldn’t appeal to. So well written, I flew through it. I’ve never even been compelled to write a review on amazon but this is a fantastic, fantastic book. Delight in!

Chasing Greatness is a fantastic book that weaves the profiles of several of the most legendary golfers in history into a fascinating narrative of the 1973 U.S. Open at Oakmont.
For better or worse, I am a fan of the show Lost. In a similar vein as Lost, Chasing Greatness starts at the 1973 U.S. Open, describing the lead-up to the event and flashes back to past events and tales each of the major characters. These “flashbacks” help to illuminate the personalities, career paths, and individual quirks of all the major players, and enable the reader to erect a relationship with every character and even to choose sides as the drama continues to erect throughout the book.
Chasing Greatness is also better researched than the vast majority of sports books. Kudos to this tandem of authors who establish a way to apply the best of their literary traits into a tale that is a remarkably accessible, engaging, and thought-provoking read for both the seasoned golfer and the casual observer.
