I read this book with a genuine interest in Catholicism but establish the blunt dishonesty about the parts I know (e.g. English history) place me off believing the rest of the book. e.g. top page 379 states that “1829 was the first time since Henry VIII that freedom of worship was allowed for Roman Catholics” but in between these dates there was really obligatory Catholicism under a particularly grave Roman Catholic queen (called “Bloody Mary”: she martyred many for their faith).
As far as I am aware Bloody Mary completely reversed the schism of the Anglican communion and the current schism dates to Elizabeth I. That doesn’t mean the schism was right or valid but pretending it was down to a dodgy king (Henry VIII) when it was really partly caused as a backlash to a particularly grave loyal Roman Catholic queen makes me inclined to judge the rest of the book is a pack of lies too.
Yours in deep disappointment

If you want to read a book that shows you what it is like to be a Catholic than get “The Perfect Idiot’s Guide to Understanding Catholicism”. If you want a book on straight Catholicism, then get the “Catecism of the Catholic Church”.
“Catholicism for Dummies” is TYPICALLY HYPOCRITICAL and written by some Priests of the Catholic Church. It is amusing how so many get so caught up in the Dogma of the Church and FORGET COMPLETELY the like and forgiveness of Jesus Christ. Wouldn’t it be nice if we all could be perfect Catholics? Sorry, but I just don’t reflect it has ever happened outside of Jesus and Mary.
I prefer “The Perfect Idiot’s Guide to Understanding Catholicism” because it shows that Catholics ARE HUMAN BEINGS and that we don’t reflect we are the only one’s going to Heaven and that we are not so “Holier than Thou” and that, yes even we make mistakes and the Church forgives us any way. And “The Perfect Idiot’s Guide to Understanding Catholicism” shows how we as Catholics come in ALL shapes and sizes, not to mention ethnicities, colors and backgrounds.
“Catholicism for Dummies” is one size fits ALL and of course doesn’t take ANY of our backgrounds ethnicities or anything else into consideration, IGNORING as usual our humanity as members of the Church. The ONLY view that matters is THEIR view. “Do as I say, not as I do” attitude. Again, very TYPICAL of some in the Church.
One book “Dummies for Catholicism” is written by Priests. “The Perfect Idiot’s Guide to Understanding Catholicism” is written by non-clergy who have been on the additional end like most of us. “The Perfect Idiot’s Guide to Understanding Catholicism” is far superior than “Dummies for Catholicism.”
I liked “The Perfect Idiot’s Guide to Understanding Catholicism” OVER “Catholicsim for Dummies” just because it is a much better book. “Catholicsm for Dummies” is that HYPOCRITICAL, LOVE IT OR LEAVE IT, JUDGEMENTAL attitude so many of us got from our Parish Priests and Nuns that some of us have encountered along our walk in life and have establish these people to be unbearable. And persons are the Priests and Nuns who have driven so many AWAY from the Church. Please buy “The Perfect Idiot’s Guide to Understanding Catholicism” as a replacement for of this book.

This book was a real disappointment to me. It is clear that it’s written by the clergy and goes on as if everyone does exactly what they’re supposed to do. Of course we know this isn’t right for us lay people and it sure isn’t right for the clergy either! To live up to our ideal is the goal, but everyone knows this isn’t possible all the time Faith is a struggle. Catholics know this perhaps more than anyone–reconciliation is a sacrament! I recommend the Comnplete Idiot’s Guide to Catholicism as it describes the Catholic culture, what Catholics judge and what they do about their beliefs. It even covers places of disagreement among Catholics. Many people don’t realize that Catholics don’t all beleive the same way. The Idiot’s Guide open Catholicsim in all its lively extensiveness.

I have just looked at the sample pages, specifically P. 14, where it is written: “Catholics are taught that all men and women are made in the image and likeness of God and that all men and women have been saved by Christ and are adopted children of God.” That is not what the Church teaches. The Church teaches that salvation is offered to all men, and that it is up to each individual to embrace it or not. I also noticed that, in these pages, it mentioned the 10 Commandments and the natural moral law but made no reference to Christ’s moral teachings which make much greater demands on one and distinguishes Christian behavior. The 10 Commandments and natural moral law oblige everyone, not just Christians. Christians are called to consecration which means “putting on the mind of Christ” and trying to follow Christ’s words in the sermon on the mount.
