Following Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans is back. The city has fought back with a vengeance and in 2007 drew record crowds to many of its festivals. For example, the 2007 French Quarter Festival celebrated its 24th year with a record crowd of over 450,000. The 2007 Mardis Gras drew over 800,000 and hotels reported a 95% occupancy rate. There are now over 140 major hotels open with near pre-Katrina numbers of rooms available. Nearly 100% of French Quarter and main tourist areas have reopened. Most major airlines have added flights to New Orleans over the past year. New Orleans remains one of the most visited US cities and the new DK Eyewitness Guide New Orleans is timed perfectly to the city’s resurgence.

Product Description
In 1996, a twenty-three-year-ancient soldier in the British Army was flying over an African desert on a routine parachute jump. He had a lot to look forwards to-a long career yet to be of him in the army, a gorgeous girlfriend back home. But persons dreams were cut fleeting when his parachute failed to open at eleven thousand feet. He had cracked three vertebrae and come within a fraction of severing his spinal cord. A grueling eight months of physical therapy followed. Bear had to retrain his muscles to do all of the things we take for granted-how to sit, stand, walk, even breathe. Eighteen months after his manufacturing accident he overcame incredible odds to reach the peak of Everest.

THE KID WHO CLIMBED EVEREST is a tale of courage and determination. Bear’s quest for funding for his expedition, his seventy days on Everest’s southeast face, and a narrow brush with death after a fall into a crevasse at nineteen thousand feet, make the tale an essential read for anyone who’s ever had a dream and made it come right.
Amazon.com Review
“Everest,” writes British climber Bear Grylls, “is no place to prove yourself. The likelihood of reaching the summit is so slim that you’re inevitably setting yourself up to be disappointed.”

But, Grylls continues, mountains are most certainly an arena where alpinists prompt their deepest drives, and he had more ambition than most. Terribly injured in a parachuting manufacturing accident in 1996, he resigned his army commission and cast about for a new career–a choice he succeeded in putting off by enlisting in a climbing expedition to the world’s tallest mountain. Now, Grylls points out, the odds of a well-conditioned climber’s building the summit of Everest are something like one in a hundred; for climbers under the age of 30, who lack the experience and conditioning that age brings, persons odds slim down to 1 in 1,000. Twenty-three at the time, Grylls took his chances nonetheless, despite the “sinking feeling that I had just made a commitment that was going to drag me a small too far out of my comfort zone.”

He fulfilled his commitment, though surely not lacking discomfort, frightened but determined, building his way up deadly obstacles such as the Lhotse Face Icewall and its deep crevasses. Additional climbers were not so lucky, he writes in this you-are-there account of his time on the mountain, and death is a constant presence on these pages–which may deter readers who seek to follow in his footholds. For persons content to travel up sheer rock and ice walls vicariously, though, Grylls’s book is a spirited exercise in adventure writing and a promising debut. –Gregory McNamee

Product Description

In the spring of 2007, hard on the heels of the worst winter in the history of Juneau, Alaska, Lynn Schooler finds himself facing the far side of middle age and exhausted by laboring to handcraft a home as his marriage slips away. Seeking support and escape in scenery, he sets out on a solo journey into the Alaskan wilderness, traveling first by tiny boat across the formidable Gulf of Alaska, then on foot along one of the wildest coastlines in North America.
Walking Home is filled with stunning observations of the natural world, and rife with nail-biting adventure as Schooler fords inflated rivers and eludes aggressive grizzlies. But more vital, it is a tale about finding wholeness—and a sense of humanity—in the wild. His is a solitary journey, but Schooler is never alone; human tales people the landscape—tales of trappers, explorers, marooned sailors, and hermits, as well as the mythology of the region’s Tlingit Indians. Alone in the middle of several thousand square miles of wilderness, Schooler conjures the souls of travelers past to learn how the trials of life may be better borne with the help and community of others.
Walking Home recalls Jonathan Raban’s Passage to Juneau or Jon Krakauer’s Into the Wild, but with a more successful outcome. With elegance and soul, Schooler makes a conversation between the human and the natural, the past and present, to investigate what it means to be a part of the flow of human history.
