The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya

Product Description
What if you woke up one morning, and everything changed?

It’s one week before Christmas Eve, and Haruhi and the S.O.S. Brigade (a club for her high school’s weirdest and most extraordinary students) are gearing up for holiday festivities. But just before the fun kicks off, Kyon, the only “normal” member, wakes up in a weird alternate dimension, one where Haruhi attends another school entirely, Nagato the time traveling robot is just an ordinary human, and Mikuru (the cute girl of Kyon’s dreams) doesn’t even admit him-in additional words, S.O.S. Brigade never existed.

The only clue Kyon can find is a bookmark left by the robot version of Nagato, which leads him on a quest back in time, where he interacts with the storyline from “Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody”, a fleeting tale from the previous Haruhi book, The Boredom of Haruhi Suzumiya.

This fun and odd holiday tale is reminiscent of A Christmas Carol and It’s a Wonderful Life.

Life As We Knew It

Product Description

Miranda’s disbelief turns to dread in a split second when an asteroid knocks the moon closer to the planet. How should her family tree prepare for the future when worldwide tsunamis wipe out the coasts, earthquakes rock the continents, and volcanic ash blocks out the sun? As summer turns to Arctic winter, Miranda, her two brothers, and their mother refuge to the unexpected safe haven of their sunroom, where they subsist on stockpiled food and limited water in the warmth of a wood-burning oven. In her journal, Miranda records the events of each desperate day, while she and her family tree struggle to hold on to their most priceless resource–hope.

Includes a teaser to the companion novel, The Dead and the Gone.

Amazon.com Review
It’s nearly the end of Miranda’s sophomore year in high school, and her journal reflects the busy life of a predictable teenager: conversations with friends, fights with mom, and fervent hopes for a driver’s license. When Miranda first starts hearing the reports of a meteor on a crash course with the moon, it hardly seems worth a mention in her diary. But after the meteor hits, pushing the moon off its axis and causing worldwide earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanoes, all the things Miranda used to take for granted start to disappear. Food and gas shortages, along with extreme weather changes, come to her tiny Pennsylvania town; and Miranda’s voice is by turns terrible-tempered, mad, and finally resigned, as her family tree is forced to make tough choices while they consider their increasingly limited options. Yet even as suspicious neighbors stockpile food in anticipation of a looming winter lacking heat or electricity, Miranda knows that that her future is still hers to choose even if life as she knew it is over.

Veteran leader Susan Beth Pfeffer, who penned the young adult classic The Year Lacking Michael over twenty years ago, makes a stunning comeback with this haunting book that documents one adolescent’s journey from self-absorbed child to selfless young woman. Teen readers won’t soon forget this intimate tale of survival and its devious message about the treasuring the things that matter most—-family tree, friendship, and hope.–Jennifer Hubert

Product Description

The world will end on Saturday. Next Saturday. Just before dinner, according to The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch, the world’s only completely accurate book of prophecies written in 1655. The armies of Excellent and Evil are amassing and everything appears to be going according to Divine Plot. Except that a to some extent fussy angel and a quick-living demon are not really looking forwards to the coming Rapture. And a name seems to have misplaced the Antichrist.

Place New York Times bestselling authors Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett together . . . and all Hell breaks loose.

Amazon.com Review
Pratchett (of Discworld fame) and Gaiman (of Sandman fame) may seem an unlikely combination, but the topic (Armageddon) of this quick-paced novel is ancient hat to both. Pratchett’s wackiness collaborates with Gaiman’s sinister humor; the result is a humanist delight to be savored and reread again and again. You see, there was a bit of a mixup when the Antichrist was born, due in part to the machinations of Crowley, who did not so much fall as saunter downwards, and in part to the mysterious ways as manifested in the form of a part-time rare book dealer, an angel named Aziraphale. Like top agents everywhere, they’ve long had more in common with each additional than the sides they represent, or the conflict they are nominally engaged in. The only person who knows how it will all end is Agnes Nutter, a witch whose prophecies all come right, if one can only manage to decipher them. The minor characters along the way (Famine makes an appearance as diet crazes, no-calorie food and anorexia epidemics) are as much fun as the tale as a whole, which adds up to one of persons rare books which is enormous fun to read the first time, and the second time, and the third time…

FOR USE IN SCHOOLS AND LIBRARIES ONLY. A collection of Greek and Roman myths arranged in sections on the gods and early heroes, like and adventure tales, the Trojan war, and a brief section on Norse mythology.Amazon.com Review
Edith Hamilton loved the very ancient Western myths with a passion–and this classic compendium is her tribute. “The tales of Greek mythology do not throw any clear light upon what early mankind was like,” Hamilton clarifies in her introduction. “They do throw an plenty of light upon what early Greeks were like–a matter, it would seem, of more importance to us, who are their descendents intellectually, artistically, and politically. Nothing we learn about them is alien to ourselves.” Fans of Greek mythology will find all the fantastic tales and characters here–Perseus, Hercules, and Odysseus–each discussed in generous detail by the voice of an impressively knowledgeable and engaging (with occasional lapses) narrator. This is also an brilliant primer for middle- and high-school students who are studying very ancient Greek and Roman culture and literature. –Gail Hudson

R When Dismas Hardy agrees to clean up the caseload of recently disappeared attorney Charlie Bowen, he thinks it will be simple. But one of the cases is far from tiny-timethe sensational clash between National Guard reservist Evan Scholler and an ex-Navy SEAL and private contractor named Ron Nolan. Two rapid-fire events in Iraq conspired to bring the men into fatal conflict: Nolans relationship with Evans girlfriend, Tara, a gorgeous school-teacher back home in the states, followed by a deadly incident in which Nolans apparent mistake results in the death of an innocent Iraqi family tree as well as seven men in Evans platoon. As the murky relationship between the US government and its private contractors plays out in the personal drama of these two men, and the consequences become a desperate matter of life and death, Dismas Hardy starts to uncover a terrible and perilous truth that takes him far beyond the case and into the realm of assassination and treason.Amazon.com Review
Anthony Horowitz’s enormously well loved series about the world’s head of state teenage spy, returns for another round with secret agent Alex Rider fighting ingenious villains and charming every girl he meets. Eagle Strike, Horowitz’s fourth fictional foray into the world of British spy agency MI6, starts out calmly enough as Alex and his lovely companion, Miss Sabina Pleasure, trip with her family tree in the south of France. But before you can say Goldfinger, Alex spots his ancient nemesis, renowned assassin Yassen Gregorovich, on the beach. What Alex discovers is a plot so diabolical that it makes all of his previous adventures seem like a stroll in the Queen Mum’s garden. Alex must fight to keep Gregorovich from executing the plans of a mysterious and murderous madman–an operation code named “Eagle Strike.” He will just have to face down a few minor complications first: a virtual reality game that inflicts real pain; a fleet of Porche 911 GT3-driving hit men; and even a near fatal brush with death aboard the most legendary aircraft in the world, Air Force One. But he’ll persevere, or his name isn’t Rider: Alex Rider. Eagle Strike, like all of the ridiculously fun Alex Rider adventures, is a pure guilty pleasure from start to end. Even the most reluctant of readers won’t be able to resist Alex’s Bond-like ingenuity and charisma. Anthony Horowitz is a master of pacing, and as Alex swings from one cliff-hanging chapter to the next, Horowitz proves that you don’t have to be Shakespeare to pen a crackerjack plot! –Jennifer Hubert
