Political Science Research Methods

Product Description

Don t let an introduction to research methods be your students least favorite (and most intimidating) political science course. Significant, timely, insightful, comprehensive, and permanently mindful of their student audience, the authors have revamped their well loved text so that the sixth edition is friendlier and more intuitive than ever the perfect gateway to understanding not just the how but also the why behind research into politics.

Covering the discipline s major methods, the authors lead students step-by-step through the logic of research design. Building block chapters on hypothesis formation and hard, variables, and measurement are right up front; the introduction to research design, sampling, and literature reviews now come with more explanation as to why a researcher would pursue different kinds of methods; the stats chapters start with a common-sense primer that walks students through foundational thoughts and practices. Throughout the text, updated examples of contemporary research problems keep readers engaged.

Each chapter has bolded key terms that are also listed in a glossary at the end of each chapter and the end of the text. Helpful hints feature boxes give students nuts-and-bolts reminders they can refer to when they conduct their own research or assess the work of others.

NEW TO THIS EDITION

  • New examples of political science research in Chapter 1, including a case on judicial choice building and current research into public opinion on the war in Iraq.
  • Expanded discussion of theory in Chapter 2, showing how competing paradigms can be applied to the same topic of study.
  • Substantially updated discussion of survey research including coverage of Internet polling and a fuller description of interviewing.
  • Computational formulas and calculations are now featured in How It s Done boxes allowing students to separate lengthy calculations from substantive discussion of the meaning or interpretation of statistical results.
  • Greater coverage of newer developments in applied statistics, including exploratory data analysis and descriptive and inferential statistics for counts and functions of counts. In all-purpose, less emphasis on computation, and more on interpretation.
  • Reorganized statistics chapters for better comprehension with regression analysis and logistic regression in their own chapters.
  • A new overview of statistical analysis, including discussion of data preparation, description, modeling, inference, interpretation, and the communication of results.

My Life

My Life

Product Description
President Bill Clinton’s My Life is the strikingly candid portrait of a global leader who chose early in life to devote his intellectual and political gifts, and his extraordinary capacity for hard work, to serving the public.

It shows us the progress of a remarkable American, who, through his own enormous energies and efforts, made the unlikely journey from Hope, Arkansas, to the White House–a journey fueled by an impassioned interest in the political process which manifested itself at every stage of his life: in college, effective as an intern for Senator William Fulbright; at Oxford, apt part of the Vietnam War protest movement; at Yale Law School, campaigning on the grassroots level for Democratic candidates; back in Arkansas, running for Congress, attorney all-purpose, and administrator.

We see his career shaped by his resolute determination to improve the life of his fellow citizens, an unfaltering commitment to civil rights, and an exceptional understanding of the practicalities of political life.

We come to know the emotional pressures of his youth–born after his father’s death; caught in the dysfunctional relationship between his feisty, nurturing mother and his abusive stepfather, whom he never stopped to like and whose name he took; drawn to the brilliant, compelling Hillary Rodham, whom he was determined to marry; passionately devoted, from her infancy, to their daughter, Chelsea, and to the entire experience of fatherhood; slowly and painfully beginning to comprehend how his early denial of pain led him at times into damaging patterns of behavior.

President Clinton’s book is also the fullest, most concretely detailed, most nuanced account of a presidency ever written–encompassing not only the high points and crises but the way the presidency really works: the day-to-day bombardment of problems, personalities, conflicts, setbacks, achievements.

It is a tribute to the positive impact on America and on the world of his work and his ideals.

It is the gripping account of a president under concerted and inexorable assault orchestrated by his enemies on the Far Right, and how he survived and prevailed.

It is a treasury of moments caught alive, among them:

  • The ten-year-ancient boy watching the national political conventions on his family tree’s new (and first) television set.

  • The young candidate looking for votes in the Arkansas hills and the local seer who tells him, “Anyone who would battle at a beer joint in Joiner at midnight on Saturday night deserves to carry one box…. You’ll win here. But it’ll be the only damn place you win in this county.” (He was right on both counts.)

  • The roller-coaster ride of the 1992 battle.

  • The extraordinarily frank exchanges with Newt Gingrich and Bob Dole.

  • The delicate manipulation needed to convince Rabin and Arafat to shake hands for the camera while keeping Arafat from kissing Rabin.

  • The cost, both public and private, of the scandal that threatened the presidency.

Here is the life of a fantastic national and international figure, revealed with all his talents and contradictions, told openly, directly, in his own completely recognizable voice. A unique book by a unique American.Amazon.com Review
An exhaustive, soul-searching memoir, Bill Clinton’s My Life is a refreshingly candid look at the ex- president as a son, brother, teacher, father, spouse, and public figure. Clinton painstakingly outlines the history behind his greatest successes and failures, including his dedication to educational and economic reform, his war against a “vast right-wing operation” determined to ruin him, and the “morally indefensible” acts for which he was nearly impeached. My Life is autobiography as therapy–a personal history written by a man trying to face and banish his private demons.

Clinton approaches the tale of his youth with gusto, sharing tales of giant watermelons, nine-pound tumors, a charging ram, legendary mobsters and jazz musicians, and a BB gun standoff. He offers an equally energetic portrait of American history, pop culture, and the evolving political landscape, covering the past events that shaped his early years (namely the deaths of Martin Luther King Jr. and JFK) and the events that shaped his presidency (Waco, Bosnia, Somalia). What makes My Life remarkable as a political memoir is how painstakingly it is infused with Clinton’s unassuming, charmingly pithy voice:

I learned a lot from the tales my uncle, aunts, and grandparents told me: that no one is perfect but most people are excellent; that people can’t be judged only by their worst or weakest moments; that harsh judgments can make hypocrites of us all; that a lot of life is just showing up and hanging on; that laughter is regularly the best, and sometimes the only, response to pain.

But, that same voice might tire readers as Clinton applies his penchant for minute details to a distractible laundry list of events, from his youth through the years of his presidency. Not wanting to forget a single detail that might help account for his actions, Clinton overdoes it–do we really need to know the name of his childhood barber? But when Clinton sticks to the meat of his tale–recollections about Mother, his abusive stepfather, Hillary, the battle trail, and Kenneth Starr–the sincerity of emotion and Kitchen Confidential-type revelations about “what it is like to be President” make My Life impossible to place down.

To Clinton, “politics is a contact sport,” and while he claims that My Life is not proposed to make excuses or assign blame, it does described him as a fighter whose strategy is to “take the first hit, then counterpunch as hard as I could.” While My Life is primarily a stroll through Clinton’s memories, it is also a scathing rebuke–a revenge against his detractors, including Kenneth Starr, whose “mindless search for scandal” protected the guilty while “persecuting the innocent” and distracted his Administration from pressing international matters (including strikes on al Qaeda). Counterpunch indeed.

At its core, My Life is a charming and intriguing if flawed book by an equally intriguing and flawed man who had his worst failures and humiliations made public. Ultimately, the man who left office in the shadow of scandal offers an honest and open account of his life, allowing readers to witness his struggle to “drain the most out of every moment” while maintaining the character with which he was raised. It is a remarkably intimate, persuasive look at the boy he was, the President he became, and man he is today. –Daphne Durham

Soul of a Citizen: Living With Conviction in a Cynical Time

    Product Description
Soul of a Citizen awakens within us the desire and the ability to make our voices heard and our actions count. We can lead lives worthy of our convictions.A book of inspiration and integrity, Soul of a Citizen is an antidote to the twin scourges of modern life-powerlessness and cynicism. In his evocative style. Paul Loeb tells moving tells moving tales of ordinary Americans who have establish unexpected fulfillment in social involvement. Through their example and Loeb’s own wise and powerful lessons, we are compelled to go from passivity to participation. The reward of our action, we learn, is nothing less than a sense of tie and purpose not establish in a purely personal life.Amazon.com Review
These are indeed cynical times. But to hide behind the smugness of cynicism is a kind of self-imposed death sentence, clarifies writer and social commentator Paul Loeb. In fact, now is the ideal time for gathering all our strengths and wisdom as spiritual beings and applying ourselves to shaping a better world, he claims.

Are we talking social activism here? Well, yes. But before you cringe from images of shrill, humorless, burned out activists, keep in mind that Loeb is talking about a new kind of activism–an exciting, spiritual model for making social change. We don’t have to be pious or martyred saints (as he clarifies throughout one chapter), starving ourselves in the name of a cause or staging protests in freezing rain. We can be “excellent enough” activists, assuming the task of helping 10 people in need rather than taking on the globe. We can remember the power of storytelling when convincing an audience, rather than angrily spewing scary facts. We can replenish ourselves so that we do not burn out. We can emphasize themes such as community and forgiveness rather than separatism and blame.

This is a deeply spiritual book, but make no mistake: Loeb’s writing, research, and integrity are as levelheaded as they come. Soul of a Citizen may well become The Handbook for activism at the turn of the century. –Gail Hudson

    Product Description

As the economic giants of Asia and elsewhere have awakened, Western leaders have increasingly struggled to maintain economic stability. The international financial crisis that started in 2007 is but one result of the emerging nations’ increased gravitational pull. In this vividly written and compellingly argued book, Stephen D. King, the global chief economist at HSBC, one of the largest banking groups in the world, suggests that the decades yet to be will see a major redistribution of wealth and power across the globe that will force patrons in the United States and Europe to stop living beyond their means.

The tide of money washing in from emerging nations has already fuelled the recent property bubble in the West, while new patterns of trade have left the West increasingly dependent on risky financial services. Unless things change drastically, King argues, the increasing power of emerging markets, when coupled with poor internal regulation and an increasingly anachronistic system of global governance, will result in greater instability and income inequality, accompanied by the risk of a major dollar decline. And as Western populations age and emerging economies renovate further, the social and political consequences may be alarming to citizens who have grown accustomed to living in prosperity.

A part of the proceeds of this book will be donated to the Somaly Mam Foundation.

A riveting, raw, and gorgeous memoir of tragedy and hope

Born in a village deep in the Cambodian forest, Somaly Mam was sold into sexual slavery by her grandfather when she was twelve years ancient. For the next decade she was shuttled through the brothels that make up the sprawling sex trade of Southeast Asia. Trapped in this treacherous and desperate world, she suffered the cruelty and horrors of human trafficking—rape, torture, deprivation—until she managed to escape with the help of a French aid worker. Emboldened by her newfound freedom, education, and security, Somaly blossomed but remained haunted by the girls in the brothels she left behind.
Written in exquisite, spare, unflinching prose, The Road of Lost Innocence recounts the experiences of her early life and tells the tale of her awakening as an liberal and her upsetting and courageous fight against the powerful and corrupt forces that steal the lives of these girls. She has orchestrated raids on brothels and rescued sex workers, some as young as five and six; she has built shelters, ongoing schools, and founded an organization that has so far saved more than four thousand women and children in Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, and Laos. Her memoir will place you awestruck by her tenacity and courage and will renew your faith in the power of an individual to bring about change.

The definitive book on jingoism—over a quarter of a million copies sold worldwide. Imagined Communities, Benedict Anderson’s brilliant book on jingoism, forged a new meadow of study when it first appeared in 1983. Since then it has sold over a quarter of a million copies and is widely considered the most vital book on the theme. In this momentously anticipated revised edition, Anderson updates and elaborates on the core question: what makes people live, die and kill in the name of nations? He shows how an originary jingoism born in the Americas was adopted by well loved movements in Europe, by imperialist powers, and by the anti-imperialist resistances in Asia and Africa, and explores the way communities were made by the growth of the nation-state, the interaction between capitalism and printing, and the birth of vernacular languages-of-state. Anderson revisits these fundamental thoughts, showing how their weight has been tested by the events of the past two decades.
