Product Description
Here is one of the most riveting first-person accounts ever to come out of World War II. Robert Leckie enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in January 1942, before long after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. In Helmet for My Pillow we follow his odyssey, from basic training on Parris Island, South Carolina, all the way to the raging battles in the Pacific, where some of the war’s fiercest fighting took place. Recounting his service with the 1st Marine Division and the brutal action on Guadalcanal, New Britain, and Peleliu, Leckie spares no detail of the horrors and sacrifices of war, painting an unvarnished portrait of how real warriors are made, fight, and regularly die in the defense of their country.

From the live-for-today rowdiness of marines on place to the terrors of jungle warfare against an enemy determined to fight to the last man, Leckie describes what war is really like when victory can only be measured inch by bloody inch. Natural fiber throughout are Leckie’s hard-won, eloquent, and painstakingly unsentimental meditations on the meaning of war and why we fight. Unparalleled in its immediacy and accuracy, Helmet for My Pillow will place no reader unconcerned. This is a book that brings you as close to the mud, the blood, and the experience of war as it is safe to come.

Now producers Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg, and Gary Goetzman, the men behind Band of Brothers, have adapted material from Helmet for My Pillow for HBO’s epic miniseries The Pacific, which will thrill and edify a whole new generation.

I Am Nujood, Age 10 and Divorced

  • Condition: NEW

Product Description
“I’m a simple village girl who has permanently obeyed the orders of my father and brothers. Since forever, I have learned to say yes to everything. Today I have chose to say no.”

Forced by her father to marry a man three times her age, young Nujood Ali was sent away from her parents and beloved sisters and made to live with her spouse and his family tree in an isolated village in rural Yemen. There she suffered daily from physical and emotional abuse by her mother-in-law and nightly at the rough hands of her spouse. Flouting his oath to wait to have sexual relations with Nujood until she was no longer a child, he took her virginity on their wedding night. She was only ten years ancient.

Unable to suffer the pain and distress any longer, Nujood fled—not for home, but to the courthouse of the capital, paying for a taxi ride with a few precious coins of bread money. When a renowned Yemeni lawyer heard about the young victim, she took on Nujood’s case and fought the archaic system in a country where nearly half the girls are married while still under the officially authorized age. Since their unprecedented victory in April 2008, Nujood’s courageous defiance of both Yemeni customs and her own family tree has attracted a storm of international attention. Her tale even impelled change in Yemen and additional Middle Eastern countries, where underage marriage laws are being increasingly enforced and additional child brides have been granted divorces.

Recently honored alongside Hillary Clinton and Condoleezza Rice as one of Glamour magazine’s women of the year, Nujood now tells her full tale for the first time. As she guides us from the magical, fragrant streets of the Ancient City of Sana’a to the cement-block slums and rural villages of this very ancient land, her unflinching look at an injustice suffered by all too many girls around the world is at once shocking, inspiring, and utterly unforgettable.

Aesop’s Fables; a new translation

Where to buy Aesop’s Fables; a new translation books online?

Aesops Fables; a new translation

Product Description
Aesop (c620-560 BC), known only for the genre of fables ascribed to him, was by tradition a slave who was a contemporary of Croesus and Peisistratus in the mid-sixth century BC in very ancient Greece. The various collections that go under the rubric Aesop’s Fables are still taught as moral lessons and used as subjects for various entertainments, especially children’s plays and cartoons. Most of what are known as Aesopic fables is a compilation of tales from various sources, many of which originated with authors who lived long before Aesop. Aesop himself is said to have composed many fables, which were passed down by oral tradition. Socrates was thought to have spent his time turning Aesop’s fables into verse while he was in prison. Demetrius Phalereus, another Greek philosopher, made the first collection of these fables around 300 BC. This was later translated into Latin by Phaedrus, a slave himself, around 25 BC. The fables from these two collections were soon brought together and were eventually retranslated into Greek by Babrius around A. D. 230. Many additional fables were included, and the collection was in turn translated to Arabic and Hebrew, further enriched by additional fables from these cultures.

The Pacific

The Pacific

  • ISBN13: 9780451230232
  • Condition: NEW
  • Notes: Brand New from Publisher. No Remainder Mark.

Product Description
In this companion to the HBO(r) miniseries-executive produced by Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg, and Gary Goetzman-Hugh Ambrose reveals the intertwined odysseys of four U.S. Marines and a U.S. Navy carrier pilot during World War II.

Between America’s refuge from China in late November 1941 and the moment All-purpose MacArthur’s airplane touched down on the Japanese mainland in August of 1945, five men connected by fluke fought the key battles of the war against Japan. From the debacle in Bataan, to the miracle at Midway and the relentless vortex of Guadalcanal, their solemn oaths to their country later led one to the Fantastic Marianas Turkey Shoot and the others to the coral strongholds of Peleliu, the black terraces of Iwo Jima and the killing fields of Okinawa, until at last the survivors loved a triumphant, yet uneasy, return home.

In The Pacific, Hugh Ambrose focuses on the real-life tales of the five men who place their lives on the line for our country. To deepen the tale revealed in the miniseries and go beyond it, the book dares to chart a fantastic ocean of enmity known as The Pacific and the courageous men who fought. Some considered war a profession, others enlisted as citizen soldiers. Each man served in a different part of the war, but their respective duties required every ounce of their courage and their might to defeat an enemy who preferred suicide to surrender. The medals for gallantry which were pinned on three of them came at a shocking fee-a fee paid in full by all.

With the Old Breed

  • ISBN13: 9780891419068
  • Condition: NEW
  • Notes: Brand New from Publisher. No Remainder Mark.

Product Description
In The Wall Street Journal, Champion Davis Hanson named With the Ancient Breed one of the top five books on epic twentieth-century battles. Studs Terkel interviewed the leader for his definitive oral history, The Excellent War. Now E. B. Sledge’s acclaimed first-person account of fighting at Peleliu and Okinawa returns to thrill, edify, and inspire a new generation.

An Alabama boy steeped in American history and enamored of such heroes as George Washington and Daniel Boone, Eugene B. Sledge became part of the war’s legendary 1st Marine Division–3d Battalion, 5th Marines. Even after intense training, he was shocked to be thrown into the battle of Peleliu, where “the world was a nightmare of flashes, explosions, and snapping bullets.” By the time Sledge hit the hell of Okinawa, he was a combat vet, still filled with dread but no longer with panic.

Based on notes Sledge secretly kept in a copy of the New Tribute, With the Ancient Breed captures with utter simplicity and searing honesty the experience of a soldier in the fierce Pacific Theater. Here is what saved, threatened, and changed his life. Here, too, is the tale of how he learned to despise and kill–and came to like–his fellow man.

Climb aboard for the swashbuckling adventure of a lifetime. Treasure Islandhas enthralled (and caused slight seasickness) for decades. The names Long John Silver and Jim Hawkins are destined to remain pieces of folklore for as long as children want to read Robert Louis Stevenson’s most legendary book. With it’s dastardly plot and motley crew of rogues and villains, it seems unlikely that children will ever say no to this timeless classic. –Naomi Gesinger
