With most anthologies its a mixed bag. Burning Up is a right mix as it offers several different genres in one book. i wasnt really blown away but some tales were really fantastic and others were just ok for me
Nalini Singh-Whisper of Sin
Emmett is a changeling sentinnel that runs into our heroine Ria. This takes place earlier then the additional changeling tales and I lvoed it for giving the background on how Ria finished up with Lucas as his right hand in the office and we also learn how Ria blew out Emmett’s ear drum which answered a teasing tidbit from one of the later psy/changeling novels. For all its shortness I truly loved it but I’m bias because I like this series.(4stars)
Angela Knight-Blood and Roses
Knight takes back to her world of vampires but its an older time where Blood Roses are the personification of womanhood. Amaris is a Blood Rose and grew up with dreams of falling for a handsome vampire. Sorry to say, past experience has taught her to be wary. A vampire who has every reason to distrust any and all Blood Roses changes her mind. This was a excellent tale but I reflect it could have used a few more pages. The set up would really have gone over well in a fuller scale novel (3.5)
Virgina Kantra-
I’m sorry to have forgotten the title but it takes up with the Children of the Sea tale. If you’ve been following this tale takes place during a past setting so we dont see familiar faces from Worlds End but we do get a glimpse of Morwenna’s twin brother who has a fuller part contemp about his like and it does take place on the island we know. Morwenna is of the finfolk and has an affinity for the sea. While staying in a cabin she runs into a soldier who has come home to settle down. John Harris is drawn to Morwenna webbed toes and all. This was just excellent for me and I rated it average since I have preferred the additional finfolk tales. (3)
At last and closing up this anthology we have MelJean Brooks who has gone with a new steam punk romance. This reminded me of the Crimson series with Liz Maverick and a group of additional talented ladies. I didnt know how to classify persons earlier tales but steam punk could kinda fit. Here they be Monsters is about Ivy a talented blacksmith who clashes with an air pirate name Mad Machen. This was a cross between past and sci fi. Not a favorite but enjoyable none the less for the excellent writing and the excellent tale. (3)
So while I wasnt disappointed as a whole, I’m not sure if this will end up on the keeper shelf

As usual (in anthologies) with rare exceptions you get one really fantastic tale(Nalini Singh), one so so tale (Angela Knight)and two not so fantastic. I really loved Nalini Singh’s tale as I also delight in her books. This is really why I bought this book in the first place but I wish I had saved my money. I had to really struggle through the last two tales. I will be very hestitant to buy one again.

I bought this collection of fleeting tales primarily for the selection by Nalini Singh. I’ve been a fan of hers for ages and have read everything she’s ever done – she can pretty much do no incorrect in my opinion. And I certainly loved her contribution. I sort of remember Ria from Salve to Sensation so it was nice to see her pleased ending.
BUT….the piece by Meljean Brook was out-of-this-world incredible. I had never heard of steampunk, but I guess the concept is one that is honestly high profile at the moment. The recent Sherlock Holmes movie certainly had fundamentals of it now that I reflect about it. I was absolutely riveted by the world that was made in that fleeting tale – a Victorian era that has taken a bit of a different turn than what we know and accept historically. Sort of sci-fi meets history. The characters were lovely, especially Eben. I adored Ivy as well, but she was a bit less dimensional for me than Mad Machen. My only additional criticism would be this: how exactly do you pronounce Mad Machen? Obviously the “Mad” part is self-explanatory – it’s the “Machen” part that’s throwing me. Oh well, one of these days I’ll get around to googling it like a normal person. Anyway, the last few scenes of this tale were perfectly done, heart-wrenching and heart-warming all at once. Adore. I honestly can’t remember enjoying a plotline so much.
I immediately went to check Brook’s backlist hoping to find this fleeting was part of a longer series and it is. The first full-part novel, The Iron Duke, comes out in October and I’ve got it on a pre-buy.
The additional tale, by Virginia Kantra, was also well done. Sweet is the word I would use for it.

I was unfamiliar with all the authors when I bought this anthology. I establish Nalini Singh’s contribution thin. I nearly felt I was reading a synopsis and establish the characters uninteresting.
Angela Knight’s tale, Blood Rose, was reasonably excellent. Her characters were fully fleshed out, and I was able to know the “world” of her characters lacking having read any of her others books. I loved her writing and will look for her books.
The premise of Virginia Kantra’s tale has been done before and better. As she had no “world” to erect, the time the additional authors spent doing so wasn’t place to excellent use to fully renovate her characters. It is very possible this fleeting tale would have been better as a book, and noticed she does have the brother’s tale coming out as a novel.
Now to Meljean Brook’s tale, Here There Be Monsters. How original! I loved this tale and went into it with very low expectations because of the punk reference. I was fascinated with the “world”, Ivy’s *skills* as a blacksmith, and felt Ms Brook showed fantastic skill in condensing so much information into such a excellent tale. I finished feeling as satisfied as I do when I’ve finished a really excellent book..sorry to have finished but looking forwards to the next journey in the series. I immediately looked to see when The Iron Duke, the full-part novel, will be unrestricted (you can pre-order for October) and was disappointed it isn’t available for Kindle. I hope that changes because it is a book I will certainly will buy.
