Despite being scoffed at by Harold the dog, Chester the cat tries to warn his human family tree that their darling foundling baby bunny must be a vampire. Read by Lou Jacobi. Book available.Amazon.com Review
This immensely well loved children’s tale is told from the point of view of a dog named Harold. It all starts when Harold’s human family tree, the Monroes, goes to see the movie Dracula, and young Toby accidentally sits on a baby rabbit wrapped in a bundle on his seat. How could the family tree help but take the rabbit home and name it Bunnicula? Chester, the literate, sensitive, and keenly observant family tree cat, soon decides there is something weird about this rabbit. Pointy fangs, the appearance of a cape, black-and-white tan, nocturnal habits … it sure seemed like he was a vampire bunny. When the family tree finds a white tomato in the kitchen, sucked dry and colorless, well … Chester becomes distraught and fears for the safety of the family tree. “Today, vegetables. Tomorrow … the world!” he warns Harold. But when Chester tries to make his fears known to the Monroes, he is completely misunderstood, and the results are truly hilarious. Is Bunnicula really a vampire bunny? We can’t say. But any child who has ever let his or her imagination run a small wild will like Deborah and James Howe’s amusing, quick-paced “rabbit-tale of mystery.” (Ages 9 to 12)

This tale was very dull and had no meaning. If you want to buy something appealing read C.L.U.T.Z. or the Harry Potter series, anything but this.

In Bunnicula, the dog talks about liking CHOCOLATE cake. This might give kids the thought to feed chocolate to their dog. I’m surprised that the authors used this vehicle because chocolate is extremely toxic to dogs. One ounce of baking chocolate can kill a tiny dog. The authors could have used pound cake (get it?), or bundt cake or any additional types of sweet dessert — snickerdoodles for example. I hope they will revise future editions of Bunnicula.

Bunnicula and the rest of the books in the series were among my favorites when I was a tiny child. I recently selected up the first 3 books in a thrift shop, and I am sorry I did, because reading Bunnicula as an adult just wasn’t as fun. There are too many holes in the tale and things that don’t make sense. For instance, in one scene, Harold (the dog narrator) is bewailing the fact that he can’t see in the dark. In a few more paragraphs, he sees a drained vegetable on the floor of the dark kitchen! Harold and Chester (the cat) really act like people, unlike some additional anthropomorphized animals in children’s literature, such as the Redwall animals; when Harold is mad at Chester, he puts his paws around Chester’s neck. Have you ever seen a dog try to strangle a cat? Wouldn’t a growl have been more in keeping with canine behavior? Also, although the simplicity of the plot suggests a lower reading level (it says 6th grade on the take in, although I reflect I was in about 3rd when I originally read it), the vocabulary is more suited to an older reader, which is a small incongruous. Another reviewer has already mentioned the problem of Harold’s penchant for chocolate; dogs shouldn’t eat chocolate! In addition, Harold and Chester are really grave to each additional. It is hard to judge they are even friends. I don’t reflect their attitude towards one another is a excellent example for children. On the additional hand, I did laugh at loud at some parts of this book, and as I said I loved in immensely when I was a child. But, the problems in the book would prevent me from ever recommending it to any child I know; there are a fantastic many better books for children in this age group.
