Product Description
Americans are a positive people — cheerful, optimistic, and upbeat. This is our reputation as well as our self-image. In this utterly original take on the American frame of mind, Barbara Ehrenreich traces the weird career of our sunny outlook from its origins as a marginal nineteenth-century healing technique to its enshrinement as a dominant, nearly mandatory, cultural attitude, and exposes the downside of irrational optimism.

It is unfortunate that this book may become yet another tool for the egoic consciousness to run violently through our society. Most humans on the planet are imprisoned within the realm of their own thoughts. They judge they are their thoughts as a replacement for of being a witness to them. In you as in every additional human being there is a dimension of consciousness beyond thought. There are many tools and ways to experience this peaceful realm that is beyond thought (Meditation, Yoga, Ti Chi, Qi Gong & hundreds more) This peaceful realm is your natural state. Things like affirmations and positive thinking, When they are done correctly work on the level of thought. They can only point you in the direction of this dimension of consciousness beyond thought. So ultimately they are used as tools just like meditation to get you there.
It was appealing that the leader of this book discounted mountains of research that has been done in recent years on the power of avowal, Hypnosis, Meditation and additional healing modalities, just to prove a very narrow minded opinion that she holds. As a matter of fact in a recent study by Huge pharmaceutical company’s are finding that placebos are now effective more effectively then the actual drugs.(google it) Why? because their marketing has been to excellent. They have made the American public judge that a pill can cure you. This is a powerful form of avowal implanted in the subconscious mind with out you even knowing it.
This leader discounts quantum science as nothing that affects you personally. Like you are some how separate from the universe. My only guess, she is living in Newton’s paradigm and dose not realize that all matter is energy.Or just wanted to voice her opinion as fact lacking even trying to know quantum science. Thought forms are a ‘form’ of energy just like everything else, just a very privileged frequency than say a rock. This frequency is constantly interacting with what quantum science calls the zero point meadow. The zero point meadow is empty space. But we are finding that this space that we thought was empty is far from empty. One cup of empty space has enough energy to boil all the oceans of the planet all at once!(google it)Every cell in you body is constantly sharing information with the meadow at all times. This is excellent for you because you don’t have to consciously beat your heart, or tell your lungs when to take a breath. The zero point meadow dose all that for you. As a matter of fact your body is 99.9 % empty space! Every thing or form in the universe is a vibration. Positive thoughts are a privileged vibration than thoughts of dread, rage, and hopelessness. It has been proven over and over in hundreds of studies that positive thoughts make so called ‘excellent’ chemicals to be secreted and negative thought unbalance the body chemistry.(google it)
As a name who has dedicated his life to this theme and has seen truly miraculous healings and changes in human consciousness right before my eyes. I hope that who ever reads this book really research the theme and not take this authors opinion as fact. One thing I have learned in my travels is that constant negative thought makes Dis-ease in the body. The best way to find right plenty and right happiness is to get beyond thought, positive thought and affirmations can get you there just like any additional pointer, but the positive thoughts are not it. This is where the authors erroneous observation of the process becomes the basis of this text. It is beyond thought in the space between the thoughts this is were the healing and transformation start. The space the thoughts come out of and are being sustained by. There is an ancient adage “The finger pointing at the moon is not the moon” Affirmations are the finger or pointer, this deeper dimension of consciousness I speak of is the moon. It can only be veteran and not thought about. You cant mark it because you are it. Once you learn to tap into and make primary this dimension of consciousness. The affirmations and positive thinking will drop away and you can truly live in peace, happiness and plenty.
In my early example of “The finger pointing at the moon is not the moon” the leader of this book is only looking at the finger and cant see the larger picture. She is lost in thought and lost in the world. In our universe, like energy attracts this is how all form is made. People who read this book will be attracted to it because that is the vibration they take place to be searing at. My only hope is that they use this book in a positive way and try to find a tool that works for them (maybe even this book)to make them say “I am done suffering”. Suffering can be a fantastic teacher to point you to this dimension of consciousness beyond thought. So I see this book as a positive thing, and hope that the leader may find peace someday while she is still in the world.

Not getting the attention she needed (craved?) during her bout with breast cancer, Ehrenreich establish the ideal platform on which to vent her spleen (a terrific healing contrivance, by the way). She selected an simple and highly visible target — the power of positive thinking, a modality that stretches back in time and across all disciplines.
But, Ehrenreich offers no solution to, in her estimation anyway, this cock-eyed way of thinking (just as she didn’t offer any solution in “Nickel and Dimed,” or any of her additional diatribes). What she does provide is a touchy-feely trail of her own whining that any ordinary Joe or Jo can tell to. Who doesn’t want to take a smack at corporate America, religion, or any additional huge entity that has power? (Wanna bet she goes after cancer-drug companies next? Really, I wouldn’t mind if she did.)
It does feel excellent to rage, and Ehrenreich — and her savvy editors — do it cunningly. The publishing industry has made a science of exactly how to make the reading public turn the page (viz., People magazine, US or for that matter any gossip rag).
My advice? Laugh at what sheep people are for believing Ehrenreich’s swill. The bottom line: she’s laughing, too, all the way to the bank. That’s the only serious takeaway here.

There are two things that bother me: 1) I continue to read Ehrenreich’s books. Issue is, I grab some sort of sick satisfaction in being so negative about what she writes. (Right. Ironic.) 2) Ehrenreich NEVER offers a solution. Only a problem. So, what excellent does that do for the reader or, well, anyone? Are we supposed to formulate our own solution or just let it sit there, as in, “Yeah, golly. We Americans sure are positive people. Too terrible for us.” On a positive or negative side, aren’t we supposed to be inspired after reading something? Or just entertained by this garbage for a couple hundred pages?
I don’t get it. A name please clarify the appeal of Ehrenreich’s writing. I’m listening.

Reminds me of Dana Carvey’s character, Grumpy Ancient Man. Flibbety floo!
Barbara, how do you get out of bed in the morning? Everything’s crappy, nothing works, nothing you do will matter or change your life, why bother trying to improve your income or lifestyle or living …
Are there silly extremes with positive thinking and persons who judge in the Law of Attraction? Yes.
But Ehrenreich, who is a cellular biologist by education, adage that the mind and the body are not interconnected (wow, is that dumb), that how you reflect won’t impact how quickly you recover from illness, reach your fitness goals, bounce back from a trauma or tough time?
For a scientist to say this is just … silly. Now she’s one of them! Just the additional side of the same coin.
Hey, Barbara, I appreciate you documenting the devastating inequities of our culture in your work, but this? The people who selected up and left their lives in the ancient country to start new lives in America were … um, positive thinkers.
