Product Description
Should I really read to my baby? Is all TV terrible, or only some TV? What kind of toys do babies need? Can teaching a baby sign language really boost IQ? How should my caregiver be stimulating my baby? Should I pipe classical composition into the nursery?
New parents are regularly overwhelmed with information and advice, and in an effort to give their babies the best chances in life they buy DVDs, CDs, toys, and gear all meant to make them smarter. As co-founder of New Directions Institute for Infant Brain Development, Dr. Jill Stamm knows what most parents and child caregivers suspect: the way we care for a very young child’s developing brain has the power to shape and influence many aspects of his or her life. Contrary, but, to the belief that the “right things” can make your child a genius, the research shows that what your child needs is simpler than you reflect and within every parent’s ability to provide. In Bright from the Start, Jill translates the latest neuroscience findings into clear explanations and practical suggestions, showing you the importance of the simple ways you interact with your child every day. A leading power in infant brain development, Dr. Stamm makes new, remarkable findings accessible to everyone in Bright from the Start. What babies need isn’t a lot of “edu-tainment.” What they need is as simple as A, B, C:
ATTENTION: showing you how to increase a child’s attention span, and how to balance stimulation with down time.
BONDING: illustrating the importance of developing a strong emotional attachment between a child and a consistent caregiver—and why this is key to cognitive development.
COMMUNICATION: with leap forwards advice for tapping the tie between verbal engagement with parents and privileged IQ excise among children.
Stamm also discusses what kind of childcare environment to select, why learning toys don’t teach as much as you reflect, why reading to baby is critical and why you should limit TV time. Practical games and tips for each developmental age group will show you not only what the latest findings are but more importantly, tell you what to do with them.

This book offered a few excellent insights, but, I felt that the offer all ears too much on personal experience. I felt that the leader had already made up her mind about what she wanted to say in the book and then searched for the research to prove it. This book offered very small useful advice.

While the information was not revolutionary (for me), it helps place a laser focus on what aspects of interacting with your children are truly going to make a difference. Sorry to say, the people that really need to read this book probably won’t.

There are so many books out there for parents and many come from the point of view of the authors’ personal opinion or situation. As a new parent I have become frustrated by conflicting information and wanted something that was fact based, yet not too much “science, algorithm” type of language that would bore me to tears. I was lucky to come across this book and it was exactly what I was looking for! It clarifies things in an simple to know way and concepts are backed up by factual data from research. For example, people tell me “oh get your baby a Baby Einstein DVD to entertain him” and I wanted to learn about whether television is excellent or terrible for babies. I went online and establish some information, but when I read this book it clarified that it was not recommended for babies to watch tv and then it clarified (based on research not personal opinion) the cause and effect on the child’s development. This book allows me to come to my own conclusions based on the facts. This is what I was looking for. In addition the leader does chat about her own personal experience with her children which helps give the concepts an element of reality.
Fantastic reading, well thought out, science backed and very appealing!

Fantastic book. The leader backs up her recommendations with references to scientific studies. She also makes some recommendations that aren’t (yet) backed by science but more her observations in many years of effective in the meadow. She provides point recommendations both for parents who will be raising their children at home as well as persons that need to place their children in daycare at an early age.

My small one was a few weeks ancient when I establish this book. I was looking for concrete methods of stimulating my small one’s brain which were based on scientific evidence. I establish this book simple to read with fantastic examples. It takes you through each concept clearly, easily and lacking any gimicky jargon. It clarifies some complex thoughts very painstakingly and in a way anyone can know. This book also is full of fantastic thoughts of what you can be doing with your child so that you are being an interactive parent, not a reactive one. ALL NEW PARENTS SHOULD READ THIS BOOK!
