Product Description
The tale of the notorious vampire Count Dracula, lord of the undead, who rises from his coffin at night to suck the blood of the living is, undoubtedly, the stuff of nightmares. A lunatic asylum, a bleak Transylvanian castle, an very ancient cemetery…these are the dark backgrounds to the even darker deeds described in this most bloodcurdling of tales.Amazon.com Review
Dracula is one of the few horror books to be honored by inclusion in the Norton Critical Edition series. (The others are Frankenstein, The Turn of the Screw, Heart of Darkness, The Picture of Dorian Gray, and The Metamorphosis.) This 100th-anniversary edition includes not only the perfect authoritative text of the novel with illuminating footnotes, but also four contextual essays, five reviews from the time of publication, five articles on dramatic and film variations, and seven selections from literary and literary criticism. Nina Auerbach of the University of Pennsylvania (leader of Our Vampires, Ourselves) and horror scholar David J. Skal (leader of Hollywood Gothic, The Monster Show, and Screams of Reason) are the editors of the volume. Especially fascinating are excerpts from materials that Bram Stoker consulted in his research for the book, and his effective papers over the several years he was composing it. The selection of criticism includes essays on how Dracula deals with female sexuality, gender inversion, homoerotic fundamentals, and Victorian fears of “back colonization” by politically turbulent Transylvania.

Dracula is the worst book I ever had to read for english class. It was so stupid and the movie was even stupider. Don’t waste your time reading garbage like this book.

OK, why is this book required reading for high school students? It is very long and I reflect that Bram Stoker was german anyway that’s gotta get people confused. All of the sentances are backwords! It took me 4 whole days to read it, my entire prayer weekend. So highschoolers if you have a choice…don’t read this book.

The main prolem with this book is that Bram Stoker was not a very excellent writer. What he “made” here is the first well loved version of a creature that had already been written about several times even in his time. Bram Stokers vampire, probably because it had the history of a real life monster, captured the publics imagination and this book only sells on the back of a culture that sprang from a fantastic creation in a mediocre tale.
This will only interest persons who enthuse about horror and, specifically vampires.

I have read many horror novels. This was not a excellent at all. It ongoing out very appealing, and certain parts were not terrible at all. But all the additional things that seemingly had nothing to do with the novel was distracting and caused me to stop after 100 pages. I was to do a book report on this, and finished up doing my report on Gaston Leroux’s Phantom of the Opera, which is a wonderful tale. I would advise many to not read Dracula. Maybe I have missed something completely in this tale, that does take place sometimes, but I thought it was dreadful.
