Product Description
“Black people are not dark-skinned white people,” says publicity visionary Tom Burrell. In fact, they are much more. They are survivors of the Middle Passage and centuries of humiliation and deprivation, who have excelled against the odds, constantly building a way out of “No way!” At this pivotal point in history, the thought of black inferiority should have had a “Going-Out-of-Business Sale.” After all, Barack Obama has reached America’s Promised Land.
Yet, as Brainwashed: Challenging the Myth of Black Inferiority testifies, too many in black America are still wandering in the wilderness. In this powerful examination of “the greatest propaganda battle of all time”—the masterful marketing of black inferiority, aka the BI Complex—Burrell poses ten disturbing questions that will make black people look in the mirror and question why, nearly 150 years after the Emancipation Proclamation, so many blacks still reflect and act like slaves. Burrell’s acute awareness of the power of words and images to shift, shape, and change the collective consciousness has led him to connect the contemporary and past dots that have brought us to this crossroads.
Brainwashed is not a reprimand—it is a call to action. It demands that we question our self-defeating attitudes and behaviors. Racism is not the issue; how we respond to media distortions and plotted self-hatred is the issue. It’s time to back the BI battle with a globally based initiative that harnesses the power of new media and the wisdom of intergenerational coalitions. Provocative and powerful, Brainwashed dares to expose the wounds so that we, at last, can heal.

I heard this book and leader being touted on the Al Sharpton Radio show and it was highly recommended. I bought and read the book with the expectation of learning something previously unknown or new. WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT! Not only was their nothing new but the book itself was written in such a elementary style until it was nearly insulting. My 15 year ancient granddaughter could have done better.
The so-called “brainwashing” applied to African-Americans by the leader is so generic it can successfully be applied to any race of people. It sheds no new light on the plight of African-Americans or any people of color, and to the contrary, misleads the reader and proposes solutions that ANY person, brainwashed or not, regardless of color, would adapt to pursue a better life.
Mr. Burrell should be ashamed of himself…..it is obvious that this book was not written for enlightment as it does not even present a spark. I can only surmise it was written purely for monetary reasons. I hope Mr. Burrell uses whatever money he garners from the sale of this book, to research and educate himself about the authentic reasons for the past and present Black Experience.

I am the Yejide quoted in this book, and my words have been misrepresented and misquoted. I don’t appreciate that. My tale has been used lacking my knowledge or my consent in what equates to at worst a literary banditry and at best a third person, reworked account that does not capture the essence of my message.

Although I am only half-way through this book I find the information both informative, and compelling. Tom Burrell has managed to inform his readers about why people of color of African decent do the things they do that prevent their progress as a people using modern day analogies to bring his point home. This is a must read for every person of color whether they be of African or Latino decent. I have already begun to use his teachings in my lectures to young men and women throughout my community in the hopes that they will start to know why their destructive behavior must end.

I would recommend this book to everyone I know no matter their Race or Nationality. It should be required reading in High School or College level history classes. It is tough, stark, inspiring and historic. It is not a book for the faint of heart or the clogged minded. If you are not worried of the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth about how America has twisted the truth about Race and Race perceptions, this book is for you. I now realize how treacherous being “Brainwashed” can be to my myself, my Race and more importantly to America.

This is a very poignant manuscript, most of it you already know if you are of a certain age. Some of it you didn’t know. It was painful to read that the things you believed via folk lore are being confirmed. HOW LONG…must Black people be subjected to and thus theme themselves to such tyranny and terror? What is it about Black people that brings out the demons in white folk (many of them) and some additional “near-white” groups of people, is it their dread of white genetic annihilation to be right about it? All of this directed propaganda, despise filled speech, and laws enacted AGAINST a particular group of people is really mind boggling. The struggle continues, for sure it does. Mr. Burrell has truly gotten down to the kernels of what has been perpetrated on the Black man and woman in the hells of North America. Thank you Mr. Burrell, your book is not a revelation…but, IT IS a revelation.
