I’m a father of two young children, a boy and a girl.
I must admit that I loved this book until chapter 10. Up until this point, this book is filled with fantastic advice, challenging me, as a father, to step up and examine the way I treat and reflect about my son. This book brought me back to my childhood; playing in the woods, fishing with my friends and being kids.
Chapter 10 claims that a boy needs God and the leader relishes us with tales of children language to God, rubish! Claiming that children need to judge in an imaginary character that likes them unconditionally and will grant them “wishes” is ridiculous and harmful. Religion is not needed to teach a child about morals and right living.
So if you choose to pick up this book, skip chapter 10.

The information located early in this book was insightful but then the book deteriorated when Dr. Meeker went into a lengthy dissertation on why children should be indoctrined into religion. As a very much inquisitive and well-educated person, I continue to be insulted by the perception that people who do not follow organized religion are either morally corrupt or destined to raise problematic members of society. Her views regarding religious instruction of children about a supernatural miracle effective entity offer small to help with parenting. I appreciate and respect Dr. Meeker’s right to judge what she wishes, but I certainly reflect her chapter on her personal beliefs and biases negated the excellent part of her book.

Originally I checked out this book from my local library, Belleville Public Library, and read it. It was full of common-sense suggestions for raising boys, and since my spouse and I raised two boys we had some of the same experiences and agreed with the leader. My son is raising two boys of his own as a single divorced parent. Therefore we provided him with a copy of the book.

As an early childhood proffessional, I permanently sensed that the theories were not adding up! Boys, were somehow naturally miss wired… didn’t make sense.
This book had me from the 1st chapter! I like how Dr. Meg Meeker, M.D. tells tales about the adventures of boys, to get her point across. She has inspired me to let my son have the incredible childhood memories and life lesson that will help shape him into the man he can be!
