I was a Cub Scout, Weblo, and Boy Scout for years. Some of my fondest memories are of times spent with my fellow scouts around the campfire, telling tales, jokes, and just being BOYS. This edition reminds me of the pre-PC and pre-secular Boy Scouts, when inspection was nearly a calling for teenage boys, and certainly contributed to their moral and ethical upbringings. In this day of anti-God, anti-anything-as-long-as-it’s-secular-humanism, it’s refreshing to read a handbook with advice on serving one’s God, and that it should be a regular part of one’s life. Kudos to the publisher for re-introducing a classic.

This is a fantastic book showing the scout perspective. The additional half is the Handbook For Scout Masters 1914 recently reprinted. The two show both sides of the picture and are both amusing from their angle.
Lot of info is out of date here, such as their dietary and first aid, but that is what makes it fun.

This is a fun book and all Scouts should own one. We see how some things change, but we also see how some things don’t. Truths remain right and common sense and excellent remain so as well. Pick one up!

I’m rarely 100% pleased with a book I buy, most are enjoyable but the Dover edition of the 1911 Boy Scouts Handbook was fantastic. I was never a Scout but thought the book could be appealing. I delight in reading older books and survival manuals so I thought it was worth a shot, I wasn’t let down. It’s a excellent size, fitting easily in your hand, and reasonably thick, just over 400 pgs. It’s filled with illustrations, photos and diagrams. The contents range form Inspection, the history of, badges and supplies ( reading this section made me realize that a 1911 boy scout was more of a man than I’ll ever be) knots, woodcraft, survival, hunting, fishing, tracking, biology, science, sailing, hygiene, etiquette, first aid, how to erect gadgets, kites , bird houses and countless additional topics. This book is filled with information that should be helpful to all ages. The morality taught is commendable and the knowledge required of these Scouts should only increase one’s appreciation of a fantastic organization. (The Dover edition is recommended, I bought it for less than $8.00, there is another more generic edition with no illustration on the take in for 4 times the fee.)

I have several versions of these reprinted Scout Handbooks. I dislike this one, as the size is now similar to the current handbooks, and the covers are a glossy type of card stock. I would momentously appreciate them going back to the more traditional printing, where the book is smaller and thicker, with more of a weathered look to them.
Additional than that, they are fine books, and it is appealing to see how things have changed over the last 100 years. I recommend that any Scout or ex- Scout get one.
They are my preferred gift to a new Eagle Scout.
