With her acclaimed novels Harvest and Life Support, Tess Gerritsen has injected a powerful dose of adrenaline into the medical thriller. Now, in a new blockbuster, Gerritsen melds page-turning suspense with chilling realism as a tiny-town doctor races to unravel the roots of a violent outbreak — before it destroys everything she likes.
Lapped by he gentle waters of Locust Lake, the tiny resort town of Tranquility, Maine, seems like the perfect spot for Dr. Claire Elliot to shelter her adolescent son, Noah, from the distractions of the huge city and the lingering memory of his father’s death. But with the first snap of winter comes shocking news that puts her practise on the line: a teenage boy under her care has committed an appalling act of violence. And as Claire and all of Tranquility soon learn, it is just the start of a chain of lethal outbursts among the town’s teenagers.
As the rash of disturbing behavior grows, Claire uncovers a horrifying secret: this is not the first time it has happened. Twice a century, the children of Tranquility lash out with deadly violence. Claire suspects that there is a biological cause for the epidemic, and she fears that the placid Locust Lake may hide an insidious danger. As she races to save Tranquility — and her son — from harm, Claire discovers an even greater threat: a shocking conspiracy to manipulate scenery, and turn innocents to slaughter.

Anyone who has spent any time in Maine will quickly realize that the mispronunciation of Bangor is only one of the many ways that Bloodstream fails to accurately capture the essence of Maine. Combine that with the convoluted, highly unbelievable plot and subsequent resolution, and the unrealistic characters (Amelia, the 14-year-ancient girl from a dysfunctional family tree thinks and behaves like a well-adjusted adult) and this is one book I hope readers will skip. Maine deserves better.

Establish this book slow and have read better high school senior book reports. It was drawn out with a hasten up lets somehow end this book ending. Not my thought of aa all nighter. Went with Kings recommendation. He should stick to writing not reviewing.

This was very excellent! First off, Jan Maxwell reads the plot wonderfully, with the right emphasis and just enough emotionality to lend it credulity. But more importantly, the plot is just thrilling – from beginning to end, the pace rarely slackens, and certainly speeds up on side-B-tape-2.
Lacking ruining anything, violence is erupting among the youth of Tranquility, Maine. It starts with scuffles, and vandalism, but is soon a rising tide of murderous rage. And when recently arrived Doctor Claire Elliot sees this violence closer (and perhaps within) her own teenaged son, things take a turn for the treacherous.
Tess Gerritsen has my hard-won fanship. With most medical thriller authors, after two or three you start to see the pattern, find the baddie, and close the book with a vague sigh. Even listening to abridged audios of her work, I never reasonably guess the villain until it’s nearly too late for the heroine!
The only misgivings I have about this one is the romantic attachment that Claire finds feels a bit forced – likely a result of the abridgement, but, as I’m sure there are scenes missing that would have laid more of a foundation in their relationship.
All in all, a really enjoyable listening experience.

If you’re new to Tess Gerritsen, as I am, (I usually read Robin Cook), don’t make this one your first book of hers. I couldn’t get through it myself. It is much too languidly paced, much too slow going. Every time I thought it was FINALLY going to start getting appealing and pick up steam, it slowed down again. I don’t like real rollercoasters and I don’t like figurative ones, either. (Ah, well. Not all of Robin Cook’s books are winners, either. You can’t hit a home run every time up.)
Excellent thing, though, that I didn’t give up on Tess because of BLOODSTREAM as I am now reading HARVEST which is a MUCH better book.

I loved this book in the beginning. I thought it was pretty riveting. But then Gerritsen reverted to her romance novel background with a gratuitous (and overly trite) like scene. As well, I really got disgusted when the protagonist sees a sudden violence in her own son’s reactions and doesn’t guess that perhaps he, too, has fallen victim to the mysterious behavior change of the kids she is investigating. C’mon!
