The essential secret. The essential agent. The President’s vampire.
Zach Barrows is an ambitious young White House staffer whose career takes an unexpected turn when he’s partnered with Nathaniel Cade, a secret agent sworn to protect the president. But Cade is no ordinary civil servant. Bound by a special blood oath, Cade has spent more than 140 years in service to the president, battling nightmares before they can break into the daylight world of the American dream.
Immediately Zach and Cade receive their first joint assignment: one that uncovers a dark government conspiracy and a plot to attack the Unites States with a gruesome new biological weapon. Zach soon learns that the world is far weirder, and far more treacherous, than he ever imagined . . . and that his partner is the least of his problems.

I like vampire novels, and I like White House thrillers. Place them together, and what do you get? This book! Blood Oath is a fun, lightweight read, that will have you racing through pages to see what happens next, but will also place you frustrated because it could have been a whole lot better. Copious opportunities are wasted to delve into the background of the vampire, and additional key characters, but everything reads like an outline. If you like enjoyable nonsense, this book is for you! I liked it, but felt a small disappointed.

I won’t review the tale much, additional than I loved it. I’m not sure if it’s more Tom Clancy with a vampire or Hellboy with a vampire, but it was a fun read.
That said, I’m very miserable having to pay for an e-book, and for more than $9.99 at that, that has a lot of typos and formatting mistakes in it, and that’s the largest reason I only gave it 3 stars. Gee, I don’t know why people downloading copies of e-books as a replacement for of paying for them isn’t uncommon. Luckily the mistakes in this book haven’t been common in books I’ve bought, so while it may not prevent me from buying more e-books in all-purpose, I’ll certainly reflect twice about purchasing more books published by Penguin.

On the one hand Blood Oath follows the conceits of various vampire series from Angel to Lestat to Dracula. On the additional it mixes it up with the spy thrillers like Jason Bourne, Jack Bauer and James Bond.
There is also an appealing mash up of past facts and fictitious monsters from both literature and film sprinkled throughout as background material to the main tale.I’m looking forwards to the next book to feature Nathaniel Cade the President’s Vampire
Highly recommended!

I am not into vampires. They are turning up in ancient English novels or it’s some pasty faced kid with a girl in one hand stopping a car with the additional. The last excellent vampire novel I read was FEVRE DREAM. But when I saw the take in for this book, I was hooked. The essential scret, the ulitmate agent, THE PRESIDENT’s VAMPIRE! Come on now, how could you not fall for that?
Okay I am not going to go over the plot, read the additional reviews for that. What I will tell you is what you will get
with this book.Take a dash of the DESTROYER series, some Matthew Riely like action, a pinch of NATIONAL TREASURE movies, add a human side kick, make the vampire the hero, and you will be close to this novel.
There is gore and horror. You have Dr. Frankenstein, his monsters, the super terrible secret agency, a bent vice president, and one p.o.ed female. Plus something new! Vampire sex! Hey you can’t question for more than that.
Seriously, the writing is smooth and flows. The plot is one wild ride, but it is the epilogue that is the kicker. It sets up the events and people that you will see in the future series. This is going to be a very well loved series and since the writer is a scriptwriter can a movie be far behind?
One last thing, read the ackowledgments, espcially the last paragraph[you have to be kidding!]

Considering what most of our presidents have been up to the last 100 years or more, it wouldn’t surprise me to learn that one of them had indeed pardoned a vampire, and that said creature of the night, had worked for every succeeding president thereafter. That is some scary thought! There is some relatively minor political snark in the book, but that aside, it’s a fun read. It’s not fantastic literature, but it is well written and the plot was appealing. I establish myself really liking the characters and the dialogue was excellent. I reflect that the vampire and supporting cast have a few more tales under their belt, and I want to see more books with Zach and Cade, because I would gladly buy and read every one of them. The leader didn’t mess around with the vampire myth, or take many liberties with it, so I didn’t mind it when the vampire did things I wasn’t expecting. I did like it that he could go around in the daytime, because the explanation seemed plausible: they are merely weaker and much more vulnerable during daylight hours. Impact that in mind, and the fact that villains keep odd hours, a crime fighting, supernatural excellent guy would have to be able to work all hours of the day and night. This book was fun to read, inventive, and I thought, very clever. It was simple to get into, and hard to place down. The characters stayed with me afterward, and I was sorry that it was only 400 pages. I could easily have read another 400, because I thought the book was that excellent. None of the creatures Cade was fighting or had fought were original, but again, the leader place an appealing spin on all of them, and especially, his zombie army of dead soldiers. I establish it telling that his dead soldiers could see what was going on, but were basically just along for the ride, and unable to do anything more than what they were plotted to do. I like a book that isn’t frightening, but takes a frightening theme, and makes it readable and enjoyable. Just as Cade and Zach have more than one tale to tell, so does their talented creator. No matter what side of the aisle you’re on, you will find this a wonderful way to spend a few hours. It took me a few weeks to get around to alternative the book up, but once I had, I loved it. There is some humorous wit, none of the gore was overdone, and the writing was pretty straight forwards. If you can overlook the silly political posturing of a horror novel, then this is a nice addition to the library. I’d really give it more than five stars, because it engaged my interest more than a lot of similar books have done.
