I’ve been reading a lot of serial killer fiction lately, so maybe im jaded, but I just didnt find this book to be either particularly exciting, or compelling. In fact I had some difficulty getting into it. If your new to the series I would certainly not start here… you’ll be hopelessly lost, if your a fan, pick it up. But I would recommend Evil at Heart, if your looking for a new serial killer mystery to pick up.

Like additional reviewers, I have read a lot of the Eve Duncan novels. Just how many times can the same tale be spun? This book was by far my least favorite (I would give additional books 4-5 stars). Sometimes it was a bit “out there” and it just didn’t hold my attention like previous books of the series. I’m not sure after this one if I will try another.

I’ve liked additional novels by Iris Johansen, and this is as excellent as the best of them. Allow time, because it is very hard to place down!
There is an element of vampirism in the tale, but it’s not romanticized. There are ghosts in the tale, too.
And there is a strong marriage, going through problems, with people who like and respect each additional. Lots of terrible things take place in the book, and yet, there is justice and resolution.
I will be looking for more books by Johansen. I heartily recommend her work.

The premise of the series: Eve Duncan’s young daughter was abducted years ago and no body was ever establish. Haunted by her loss, she uses her skills as a forensic sculpter to solve murders and give closure to additional families who have lost loved ones. Sounds excellent- there’s a lot you can do with that, but this latest entry in the series takes it way too far. “Haunted” is taken factually as not only does Eve see her dead daughter but her spouse is INTERACTING with ghosts of crime victims and using them to help solve murders. Please, if I wanted this, I could just watch Ghost Whisperer.

One of the best things about the Eve Duncan series has been the stark realism to the mysteries that went along with Eve’s search for her missing and long presumed-dead daughter, Bonnie. At her side, Joe Quinn and Jane MacGuire, help Eve hold on while she comes close one time after another to learning her daughter’s killer and body – permanently so close but no further. Eve has had dreams of conversations with her daughter, permanently the same basic tale of Eve asking Bonnie what happened to her and Bonnie trying to give her mother peace by telling her she doesn’t remember, it doesn’t matter, and she doesn’t know where her body is. Bonnie permanently wants Eve to go on. Light on facts but a soothing presence nonetheless.
The series has had some flirting with the mystical with the spiritual presence of Bonnie. In a recent book in this series, we met Megan Blair who had unusual powers. But now, in this tale, a repercussion surfaces from when Joe carried Megan Blair away from the island where she heard the echoes of all of the children who had been buried there. Megan says she was in a highly charged state and may have caused Joe to renovate latent psychic abilities because he touched her. Really? This is a very unfortunate turn in the tale and in the series. It’s one thing for a grieving mother to talk to her dead child in dreams, another when her cop boyfriend suddenly can. Then Joe goes from being irritated and incredulous to finding his skill useful quick enough to place a reader with whiplash.
Here’s another question: How many psychopathic serial killers can gravitate toward Eve and try to kill her in their ongoing quest for fame? This book features Kevin Jelnak a wannabe vampire who believes that the blood of first Jane and then Eve will help place him past the end line in his quest of apt a vampire. Knowing who the killer is and that he is closing in on Eve doesn’t place much suspense to the tale.
No real suspense + not many thrills + too much woo woo = two stars.
