Blind Hope by Kim Meeder and Laurie Sacher is the latest volume about the wonderful things going on at Crystal Springs Youth Ranch which brings together abused horses and at-risk children for some incredible healing. Laurie, a team leader at the ranch, adopts an abused Australian guide, Mia, sight unseen and at first regrets the choice. Mia’s rotten teeth make every lick from her pure torture from the terrible breath. She’s also underweight and dirty with thick matted fur. But Mia’s sparkling personality quickly wins Laurie over, so that when she learns from the vet that Mia has diabetes, is going blind, and won’t live long, she is devastated by the news. Laurie can’t bear to let the darling dog go, because the more time she spends with Mia, the more she learns about what it means to be a child of God. As Mia rests in Laurie’s presence, despite being in a storm, Laurie learns to rest in God. When Mia goes completely blind and learns the she’s safest when closely listening to her master’s voice, Laurie learns the same. The format of Laurie telling the tale to Kim sometimes breaks up the emotion of the tale and feels a bit awkward, but even with that, it’s a powerful tale of healing and like. It’s one I will be passing along to family tree and friends!

Blind Hope is the tale of an unwanted dog and the woman she rescued. Mia is an abused canine in need of a excellent home and lots of like. Laurie is a lost female searching for peace and answers to questions she can’t seem to place words to. When Laurie decides to adopt Mia, she hopes to find contentment in the fact that she has reached out to one less fortunate. What she discovers, but, is that Mia is the one doing the rescuing.
Blind Hope is the touching right tale of the special relationship between a woman and her dog. It is a “must read” for dog lovers everywhere. I’m not sure if “non-dog” people would truly appreciate the tale, for I’m not sure they could tell to the forceful bond that can exist, building the dog part of the family tree as opposed to just a pet.
Because of the way the tale jumps around from telling about an event to really reliving the event, the flow is to some extent awkward and jerky. This one flaw, but, is easily overlooked due to the many uplifting messages unveiled throughout the book. I laughed, and yes, I cried. My heart mourned for Mia as she faced one hindrance after another, but at the same time, I establish myself cheering Laurie on as she fought through her uncertainties and finally establish the answers she was seeking.
Blind Hope is a heartwarming tale with an encouraging moral. I highly recommend it!

While well-written, Blind Hope: An Unwanted Dog & the Woman She Rescued by Kim Meeder and Laurie Sacher was, well, predictable. The book amounts to a “Christian Soup for the Soul” tale about a woman who adopted an emaciated Australian Guide mix. The bits about the dog, Mia, and her relationship with owner Laurie were appealing, heartwarming, and gorgeous. But, the tale was broken up by written conversations between Meeder and Sacher which ruined the flow of the tale.
I imagine the detailed accounts of these heart-to-heart talks between the two authors were supposed show the audience how much Laurie was learning about her relationship with God through her relationship with her dog, Mia. Honestly, my largest problem was that there was nothing new or fresh about this dog tale.
Because I’m a dog lover, I wanted to like this book. Though the tale is touching, the tale was too simplistic to hold my interest.

This tiny book tells about Laurie Sacher, a staff member at the Crystal Peaks Youth Ranch in central Oregon, who rescues a dog, Mia. In various life lessons, Mia teaches Laurie how to better tell to God. For example, Mia becomes blind and must listen for Laurie’s voice to avoid the pitfalls around her. So too, mentally blind Laurie must listen for God’s voice.
It’s simply written as conversations between Laurie and the leader and can be read in an hour or two. Since most people tell easily to dogs, the spiritual lessons could nicely serve as devotionals.

I am in like with this book! I read it last month as part of my morning devotions on the deck. Each morning I read one of the fleeting chapters and more than once establish tears in my eyes as I reflected on how this young woman’s journey mirrored my own relationship with God.
Here’s a synopsis from the Crystal Peaks Youth Ranch website:
An unwanted dog and the woman she rescued.
An inspiring right tale told through the engaging voice of Kim Meeder, Blind Hope reveals poignant life lessons Laurie learned from her ailing, yet courageous canine friend. Reaching out to save a dog in need, Laurie, a Crystal Peaks staff member, soon realized that the dog was saving her.
Despite the blindness of her dog, and her own heart, Laurie uncovered what she really needed most: authentic like, unconditional trust, and right acceptance — faults and all.
Laurie and her dog, Mia, both learned to follow the lead of a master they couldn’t see. In the process, Laurie learned the transforming power of God’s selfless like even for imperfect and selfish people — and she veteran a greater like than she has ever known.
The leader of the book, Kim Meeder, is the founder of Crystal Peaks Youth Ranch, a faith-based organization which ongoing from a desire to rescue horses and soon grew as a sanctuary for young people. Kim has written two additional books of tales from the ranch and how it has touched lives. This book was a departure in that an entire book was devoted to Laurie’s journey.
What’s remarkable about this book is Kim’s ability to transform Laurie’s tale of rescue and like for a dog to demonstrate God’s like for each of us. Each step along the way, as Laurie believes that she is caring for Mia, she realizes that Mia is really teaching her. As Mia struggles with severe illness and Laurie cares for her, as the dog slowly goes blind, Laurie discovers lessons about her own life and ultimately about her relationship with God. She learns that God likes us even as we struggle to find our own path and regularly get lost. That God is there with us in our darkest hours and that so much of our relationship with God is about trust and letting go of the need to do things our way.
The lessons from this book will stay with me for a long time. I’m grateful I had the chance to read it.
