In that moment, young Larten flies into a rage that the foreman wouldn’t survive. Forced on the run, he sleeps in crypts and eats cobwebs to get by. And when a vampire named Seba offers him protection and training as a vampire’s assistant, Larten takes it.

“Birth of a Killer” written by Darren Shan is a book full of action and 2 or 3 deaths. The surprising prequel of “The Cirque du Freak” series is a book that would be considered the genre horror which it is not. Well, I like this book. Every since my friend lent me the Saga of Darren Shan, I’ve loved it. I’m currently buying the whole series. I’ve been waiting for this book for a whole month for it to arrive here and for my parents to let me read it since the exams had just finished.

Anyway, this book is incredible. I like it! The details are incredible! Fantastic for any Cirque du Freak fan!
Parents, if you are unsure of what to get your kid for Christmas or their birthday, this is one of the perfect gifts!

I ongoing reading the Circque du Freak books when I ordered them at the request of my students. After reading the 12 book after only several weeks, I was an avid Darren Shan fan. He didn’t let me down with this new title; it was excellently written. I read it in only a day. It was a pleasant mixture of ancient friends from the series and new characters providing an element of intrigue. Thanks, Darren, for hooking young people into reading! I am reading the Cirque du Freak series to my class, and they heard me rave about The Saga book today. They’ll be begging to hear it next!

Loved this book! Only complaint was that it was too fleeting and now I gotta wait till April for the next one.
If you are a Larten fan, or just a Cirque fan in all-purpose, you should like this book. So much back tale revealed and only more to come! :]

I’m going to try to place aside the fact that I’m a diehard fan of Larten… wait… I can’t.
Anyway, unlike most additional books, this one got a full 12:00 AM – 3:00 AM slot and was read straight through. The pacing’s fantastic; there were no instances where I felt bored or like I should go do something else. The beginning (pre-vampire) is fantastic and gives a excellent insight into the world that he lived in. It’s the beginning of the 19th century (I judge) and we’re agreed a nicely painted image of what life was like for children back then – work, work, work. I must also say I’m very pleased with the explanation for why his hair is that vibrant orange color.
Post-apprentice sections glide by, which is probably my only criticism of the book. It seems like we’re skipping time a lot and don’t get a chance to really acclimate to a particular time in Larten’s life. In that way, the scenes can feel a small disjointed because there isn’t much tying them together, except our understanding of how vampire apprenticeship works. There are only going to be four books in this series, so some allowance is there for getting through the plot, but I still feel like I’d be more pleased taking this a small slower. I’m most sad to see that we didn’t get to see him be blooded and experience the change from human to vampire, which was one of my favorite parts in Darren’s adventure. Regardless, I imagine there’s going to be a lot of really appealing content that comes up after the end scene of this book, so I’m hoping his early vampire life was rushed through for excellent reasons.
It’s incredibly weird and fascinating watching him grow up and become a vampire. His personality as a child and teen seem wildly different from his personality as a seasoned vampire when he takes Darren on. I’m very interested in learning where the rage goes and what additional challenges are yet to be, and how he transitions from mad to controlled. I’m hoping that we’ll see some violence, as this book was considerably less violent than the average Demonata book. Right that it’s a different beast all together, but Larten clearly has rage problems, and Darren permanently manages to throw in something horrific but perfectly written – and knowing his track record with Demonata, I’m sure he’ll deliver!
This book is not only satisfying for curious fans of Larten, but Seba is an absolute gem too. The guy is hilarious, especially with some of the tests he gives and the way he talks. He’s brilliant and mysterious, and I reflect anyone who was a fan of Larten-as-mentor would appreciate Seba-as-mentor just as much.
