In Beyond the Homestretch, Lynn Reardon shares an unlikely tale. In 2002, she quit her Washington DC–area office job and stirred to rural Texas to open the racehorse adoption ranch LOPE (LoneStar Outreach to Place Ex-Racers). Here she presents a plain inside look into the world of horse racing, perfect with colorful horses, jockeys, trainers, and dash girls, depicting the insights horses can offer when we reevaluate our relationship with them.
In this riveting account, Reardon encounters dozens of unruly racehorses, all with special needs, unusual histories, and distinct personalities. As she fumbles to help them find new careers, they return the favor by apt her most memorable mentors in horsemanship and life philosophy.
Horses such as Tawakoni, the son of a Kentucky Derby winner, and Endofthestorm, the speedy bay who required an urgent situation tracheotomy, give Reardon an apprenticeship in facing dread and finding a new life. Reardon may have saved these horses’ lives, but she points out that they saved hers as well.

This is Linda Brown. I am the owner and promoter of Equine Expo in this book. I was QUOTED by name and event in this book. I NEVER said anything even close to what was printed in this book. Futher, my breed of horse was misnamed and described COMPLETELY incorrectly. Further there are comments in this book about the event I DONATED space to LOPE to use for fundraising which are COMPLETELY fake. It appears to me that this leader took her desire to make “drama” above the truth and feelings of persons who provided considerations two years in a row. I am VERY displeased at the confirmation that “no excellent deed goes unpunished.”

Thoroughbreds are my favorite breed, and to me, there is nothing more powerful than a racehorse. Once racers have lost their desire or ability to run, they deserve a chance at a second career, and Lynn Reardon is living her dream of saving them and reschooling-rehoming them after the track. Well written and filled with humor and colorful details about the rest of life on her Texas rescue and training facility, Beyond the Homestretch is a wonderful read. Highly recommended.

Lynn Reardon’s tale of the wonderful equine characters she has rescued and retrained is an absolute delight. Her gutsy, life-changing choice to place DC and her accounting career to go to Texas to rescue unwanted racehorses is a fantastic tale in itself. But it’s her heart-warming tales of the horses she takes in that capture the reader. You’ll root for them as they journey, each in their own way, from careers as racers to new jobs ranging from jumpers to therapy horses. The book is also an eye-opener to the enormous problem of what to do with race horses when their fleeting career is over — yet they still have more than 20 years of life yet to be of them. A must-read for all animal lovers!
