Product Description
Continuing Frances Mayes’ account of her like affair with Italy, “Bella Tuscany” presents the leader now truly at home there, meeting the challenges of learning a new language and touring regions outside Tuscany, including castle towns, fishing villages, and islands. With fresh adventures and updates on the characters introduced in “Under the Tuscan Sun”, Mayes also explores new themes in this wondrous confront of the world, delving into farming, wine-building, and the experience of primavera – a season of renewed possibility. And Mayes reveals more simple pleasures from her Tuscan kitchen in a section devoted to recipes. In the sensuous, plain prose that has become her hallmark, “Bella Tuscany” celebrates Mayes’ deepening tie to the land and her flourishing friendships in a newfound haven of idyllic living.Amazon.com Review
Following up on her bestselling novel, Under the Tuscan Sun, Frances Mayes returns to her beloved villa in the tiny hill town of Cortona, Italy. Welcomed back like an ancient friend, she is soon puttering in the garden, and as Mayes devotees might expect, busy in the kitchen as well. As Mayes rediscovers her taste for la dolce vita, she embarks on a journey of cultural awakening and embraces a newfound romance with the Italian language and people. “I came to Italy expecting adventure,” reads Mayes. “What I never anticipated is the absolute sweet joy of everyday life.”
Mayes is as generous a cook as she is a writer, flavoring her tale with tasty descriptions of local gustatory delights–many of which are included in a tiny recipe book. She also serves as narrator, and the beguiling simplicity of her voice makes listening as enjoyable as spending an afternoon with a well-traveled favorite aunt. I like Frances Mayes’ books. They clarify so accurately one of the most gorgeous, quaint, pure areas of the world. I like Italy and have been there five times. Her books really capture the essence of that gorgeous, charming country. I like the food descriptions too! The restoration of the house was most appealing. Anyone who likes Italy will like her books!

Just as excellent as the first book, this time the leader focuses more on daily living in Tuscany, rather than the restoration of the house. I like the descriptions of her garden and her fascination with building it a lovely place. If you loved the first book, you’ll like this one too.

It was appealing to read that some reviewers did not receive Bella Tuscany well, compared to Under the Tuscan Sun. I read the book in a park under the Sydney Harbour Bridge with our wonderful Opera House across the water on a wonderfully warm, sunny and peaceful day. Large yachts and ancient sailing ships meandered by all afternoon. It was a perfect setting to be in the right frame of mind for a book that is simply tempting you to escape and join in on the adventure. No, we cant all afford to do everything Frances has done, but it sure doesn’t hurt dreaming about it. Congratulations Frances.

Quick and simple…terrible. I have lived in Italy for the past 3 years. As an American, I am embarrassed as Ms. Mayes personifies the term “Hideous American”. A pleasant writing style is no excuse for terrible manners. I reflect that Ms. Mayes should know how to embrace the customs and ways of another country.

Sorry, Ms. Mayes, but I reflect your first swing through Italy was better. “Under the Tuscan Sun” was a fabulous book. “Bella Tuscany” pales by comparison. I do still like the descriptions and the wonderful places, but I feel that we’re between a tale and a travellogue with this entry. Really, I’m rather hoping that Mayes’ next book *is* a travellogue of all of the wonderful places we should all visit in Tuscany! I appreciate the fact that Ed is more present in this book than in the first — nice to “meet” him more, at last!
