Because of Winn-Dixie, a huge, hideous, pleased dog, 10-year-ancient Opal learns 10 things about her long-gone mother from her preacher father. Because of Winn-Dixie, Opal makes new friends among the to some extent unusual residents of her new hometown, Naomi, Florida. Because of Winn-Dixie, Opal starts to find her place in the world and let go of some of the sadness left by her mother’s abandonment seven years earlier.
With her newly adopted, goofy pooch at her side, Opal explores her bittersweet world and learns to listen to additional people’s lives. This warm and winning book hosts an unforgettable cast of characters, including a librarian who fought off a bear with a copy of War and Peace, an ex-con pet-store clerk who plays sweet composition to his animal charges, and the neighborhood “witch,” a nearly blind woman who sees with her heart. Part Frankie (The Member of the Wedding), part Scout (To Kill a Mockingbird), Opal brings her own unique and wonderful voice to a tale of friendship, loneliness, and acceptance. Opal’s down-home charm and dead-on honesty will earn her friends and fans far beyond the confines of Naomi, Florida. (Ages 9 and older) –Emilie Coulter

This book had a very dull motive and included no appealing material. I reflect there were wierd names (India Opal Bologna). I can’t judge there is going to be a movie!!! Do not read this if you can help it!

“Because of Winn-Dixie” is a heartwarming tale that is relatively excellent, until it reaches Chapter 11.

Because of Winn Dixie was required summer reading for my son going into Fourth grade. I was curious about the book so I also read it. WHY??? I don’t know why of all the wonderful books out there this one was chosen. The tale is centered around a small girl who is having distress understanding why her mother left her. She moves to a new town and it talks of the people she meets. A girl who’s brother drowned recently, a prisoner, etc. I establish the whole thing rather depressing. And the way it is written runs on and on like my four year ancient daughter who talks just to hear herself talk. The only thing that really happened in the book was the dog disappered… but was quickly establish. It very much lacked any action or excitement. Also a note to parents there are a couple of curse words in the tale… which seemed unnecessary.
